Question: is loading data initially into 3NF structure and then afterwards Denormalizing a bad idea?

I just had a SQL tech screen for a leadership level position and I must admit that I made more mistakes than I was comfortable with. I described the strategy fairly well and got the query close to the finish line, but each question I answered required 1-2 inputs from the interviewer. It’s been many years since I even touched SQL.
