Agree with the commenters that diversity is more than race. I come from a rust belt town with blue collar parents, and I'm tired of people looking down on that way of life.

like

Who is looking down on that way of life?

like

Perhaps you look down on it more than others since you avoid bringing it up for fear of judgment? I really don't think most people look down on rust belt or blue collar workers, I think people (including the middle class) look down on the poor (i.e. <$25k income/year). People also look down on particular jobs (janitors, plumbers, trash collectors, etc.) but they have those everywhere not just in middle America. I'm all for looking at diversity with a wide view and I think economic inequality is a major issue btw.

like

@P2 Nobody lol. @P1 My whole family is blue collar too, they just happen to be black. The "diversity is more than race" commentary is potentially dismissive and historically inaccurate in relation to the world in general and America specifically . Also unclear on what the white working class has to do with any of this...

@OP While racial diversity is important, other types of diversity such as religious, political, and socioeconomic are often forgotten about. Uh, yeah, I've met some snobby people doing this job, and while that's certainly not the majority of my coworkers, I avoid getting into discussions about my parents or what they do for a living, because I don't want to deal with judgment.

@P1 I'd respectfully suggest you see how race is inextricably linked with socioeconomic standing. It doesn't exist in a vacuum and can't be ignored or side-stepped. Also, I'm assuming you are white (plz correct me if I'm wrong), so consider having the privilege of not being judged by choice of you not sharing what you think people would judge, rather than be judged or assumed you are a certain way based on the way you look. There is privilege in assimilation, in being able to look like those in the majority. While everything should be addressed in time, The things that separate us on the "surface" are the biggest barriers and the things that should be addressed thoughtfully, carefully and empathetically.

Thought: When you see diversity of skin color as the most critical factor you miss out of diversity of experience and ideas. Quite often these overlap, but there are a lot of people out there like JD Vance who come from poor white roots, but because of their skin color they’re assumed to have some magical privilege bestowed upon them by society. Likewise, wealthy people of color are lumped in with their less affluent counterparts. We’re so quick to look at skin color and see the sum (cont’d)

I am currently unemployed but I am very curious about everyone’s company signature having she/her or he/him or they displayed. Are companies forcing people to write the pronouns you need to choose? I honestly never understood why somebody that wasn’t in the LGBTQ community would specify, and I know people are doing it to show support but if I started working again I don’t think I would want to put that in my signature. It seems political. What are your thoughts?

How soon is too soon to be preparing for a lateral move? I did my 1L summer internship in a niche area of securities law, loved it, took courses on it. I decided I wanted to explore securities law a little more broadly and not to pigeonhole myself. The firm I’m at is great—doing sec lit—but has zero work in that niche area that I liked. I’m afraid that I am passing on a passion, and I don’t want to get too “old” for a firm to take me on if I have zero experience in a specialty area. Advice? Thx
