While I don’t necessarily disagree, I will say that as you move up rank you need to be able to hold your own on a client call and so being vocal is part of that. This job turns into sales at the higher ranks. I’ve know great staff/seniors that produced high quality work that didn’t do great higher up for that reason. Knowing how to play politics is a decent indication that you might be more effective at hunting down business.
Agreed, but there’s a difference between being visible and being a suck up. Part of great performance as you move up is showing that you’re able to communicate effectively with your coworkers and with clients, and they should all at least enjoy working with you. It’s very possible to do this without being a suck up.

Yeah, but the skillset to make partner and bring in clients in the future is more close to that of the a** kisser. The technical skillset and being a spreadsheet jockey gets less and less important as you move up. What brings in revenue is a sales personality
@EY2: I highly doubt that’s the only reason that the firm keeps these “yes man” senior managers around. You my friend have no idea what you are talking about.
Unfortunately corporate doesn’t function this way..the a**kissers almost always make it out ahead
Every ass kisser says that.. lol jk
If only everyone would think this way, the workplaces would be a much better place. Unfortunately it’s the brown noses that make their way up to the top when they have no business in that position. Only if their bosses understood not to fall for their asskissing
It’s a natural human bias. Just like the loudest person in the room is usually confused as the smartest.
I agree A2. You watch the best leaders in meetings and they’re usually listening the whole times and are the last ones to speak.
Your personality, performance, and honesty should be enough to succeed and move up the ranks. If they’re not, you’re either at the wrong place, or you may need more self-confidence in your abilities. Being personable/well-liked by your peers and clients is not the same as being an ass-kisser.

It’s all about politics, my dude

If being responsive and likeable is a** kissing, bring that every day all day. This is a people business and nobody likes a bi!ch or a**hole.
That’s not ass kissing, that’s being responsive and likeable. They are two different things, and it seems like a lot of people commenting don’t understand that lol.
I won’t lie, as a fellow high performer at multiple big4, the difference between someone being above average and a high performer is being liked by your teams. Not much difference in work quality, it’s mostly who is more well liked.

I feel that very low performers would be very quickly unlikeable lol
Maybe in private where there isn’t as much time crunch and stress, but in public if you aren’t good at you job and are just an ass kisser, it doesn’t get you very far past maybe Senior 1 (after you lose the benefit of the doubt of being new), because if you don’t do the work right it often means that I have to and at that point you’re in the radar as not carrying your weight.
That said, “ass kissing” can also be misconstrued with just having good soft skills, and when the technical competence is on par but someone has better soft skills than you, they are better (from a work perspective, not an assessment as a person).
We work in a client service industry. It’s hard survive in that industry if you are not personable.
It's also worth noting that having too many akissers on your engagement is detrimental to your WLB 😹
If people continue to believe sales is more critical than technical skills, no wonder prices keep getting pushed down. Overall technical skills are worse and the only thing they know how to do is give out discounts.
Good quality sells itself.

May I work for you? 🥺

Ultimately, this is a people business. Yes there are a lot of technical high performers, but the human aspect is also very important. In my opinion as important if not more so as you rise the ranks and can delegate more
This ^^
vert well said. how is performance related to **s kissing? it's so sad we live in a world of opinion s and injustice. Hardworkers are not rewarded but **s kissers are beloved smdh
