Soo….has anyone embarrassed themselves in front of students? Today I got my foot wrapped up in a kid’s Chromebook charger and bit the dust in the aisle between desks. The good news is that I landed on the best possible body part, so it’s all good. This is second only to the day I ripped my skirt all the way up the back while directing choir…don’t ask.

Many years ago, I had to have neck surgery due to a ruptured disk. I was telling my students about it and exfoliating why I hah to have the surgery... except I didn't say "I have a ruptured disk", I said "I have a ruptured di@k." All I could do was laugh along with them. 🤣

... explaining... not exfoliating

I'm pretty sure embarrassing ourselves in front of the students is part of our job description.

Have I embarrassed myself in front of my students…all the time. When the kids were testing and I was sitting at my desk, my leg fell asleep. I stood up and nearly fell into the desks. I’ve had my stockings bunched up around my ankles, I’ve spilled my drinks, I’ve tripped…a million times. I just laugh with the kids. What else can you do?

Yes. I tripped over a cord once and fell. I was in my 40s (very old to my students), and one yelled out in all sincerity, “On no. Did you break your hip.” I was hurting a little, but had to laugh at that one.

Teaching second grade many years ago, I sat down on a small folding chair to work at the overhead projector with the students. As I sat down, the chair folded underneath me and I fell flat on my bottom! The students chuckled, as did I a little, but I was concerned because I was 12 weeks pregnant and had not told them yet. I was fine, but the next day I made my pregnancy announcement to the class and they were all smiling and excited for me, except one little boy was extremely concerned! He raised his hand and said, “But Mrs. Smith, you fell yesterday!” It was such a sweet, caring, moment from a young boy that I will never forget!

I have ripped a skirt and fallen on my face in front of the kids. It’s just a part of being human. 🤣

My choir kids tried to keep singing when my skirt ripped, they really did. At some point we all gave up and started laughing hysterically. The kids today actually tried to catch me…fun times.

I’ve fallen while walking my students up the stairs. Also I’ve ripped the back seam on my dress. & those are just the 2 I remember offhand 😃

Never forget the day I was reading Ramona Quimby and was saying the Halloween part “I’m the baddest witch in the west, I’m the baddest witch in the west”. Except I was reading fast and didn’t say witch….. I’ve also sat on a table and broken it, spilled my coffee anywhere and everywhere and I constantly misspeak all the time. Makes for some fun times lol

I didn’t realize a bolt in my chair fell out and when I went to go sit down the entire chair fell apart and I landed on the ground. Students laughed so hard and so did I! I tell the story to kids who are having a tough day or are feeling embarrassed about something and I use it to explain that embarrassing stuff happens to me ALL the time and the best way to deal with it (for me) is to just laugh!

I once had a desk chair that did not have the casters that were centered on their mounting bracket. As a result, if you rolled forward in the chair, all of the wheels (and support) were to the back. If you leaned forward and the wheels were like this, the chair would start to tip. I did not know why this happened for a while and one day I leaned forward to pick up a piece of paper that I dropped under my desk. All of a sudden, the chair tipped and just dumped me onto the floor under my desk. A few students saw it and laughed (after asking if I was okay). This was my first year of teaching. After leaving that building and getting a chair of my own, I was eventually transferred to my current building only to be given a chair of that exact same kind. I took one look at that chair and put it in the hallway for the custodian to take to storage. I brought mine back from home. I will never use that kind of chair again. They are so uncomfortable and so unsafe. They are very common in my district, I think they bought one for each classroom before I came along.

PE and I were playing volleyball against basically the whole 5th grade, I turned to hit the ball and fell. I Got up dizzy and went back to class. My arm stiffened up during the next 30 minutes and I had to leave early. Came back the next day with a cast on. I had broken a small bone in my elbow.

Many years ago I was sick with a cold and came to work. I was so tired that I fell out of my chair. The students will be able to remember that much more than any math topic I ever taught them.

One time when I was teaching 2nd grade, I had ripped my pants somehow right in between the legs in my crotch area (I am male); when I did a read aloud, I was wondering what the kids were giggling at, until I looked down and saw that my underwear were in full view through the large rip! I don't know how I created a rip so large that you could see it from the back, and not know it. Good thing I was wearing briefs that day instead of boxers!!

Today, tried to draw a reindeer in the board for my ESL students. Finally a shy student asked what IS that? .. Class hysterical when I finally managed to make them understand. Sigh and I have A level in Art ( didn't include animals)

I teach first grade. One day I was walking down an aisle and a child pushed his chair out and tripped me. One minute I was up and the next minute I was flat on my back. The kids all jumped up and were bending over me. I had a student teacher who was teaching at the time. She turned around and couldn't find me and wondered what the kids were doing. Ha!

Try walking down the hall after exiting bathroom with your skirt stuck up in your back nylons! At least it was 15 years ago when my backside was less generous!

Back in the day when I wore dresses and hose, I hurried out of the restroom with my slip feeling bunchy. I soon found out why--both slip and dress were tucked into my underwear/hose in the back. Sweet older teacher across the hall caught me before I walked into my classroom, but several students saw me in the hallway. I always hoped no one saw, but several years later, I started in a different school and one of those students was teaching in my hallway. She reminded me of that day one time when we were talking about the previous school.

Moms, how do you feel about therapy? Currently pregnant and I want to be the best parent possible. I’ve done grief therapy (when my mom died, years ago), and I briefly used EAP in 2019 at my old employer during a period of immense stress. I am generally a happy and resilient person and tend to leverage my meditation practice to process negative emotions and reflect mindfully on how I can treat others better. Are there parenting-focused therapists? Am I overthinking it? I want to be a great mom ❤️

My full time job (not SMU) is literally making me sick-spent time at the ER. One associate quit and another is out of full paid parental leave (must be nice, I’m not paid for doing double the work)…so I’m now expected to do the work of 3 associates. My supervisor isn’t exactly understanding, and I don’t know what to do. I’ve been searching for jobs, but it’s difficult since my background is diverse and not focused on one area of law. If I quit, how hard is it to find a new job?
