Soon I'm going to start looking for a new job, but I want to be prepared this time around and be better at negotiating my salary. Does anyone have any advice, recommended books, or helpful resources?

When you talk about salary make sure you are the first to bring it up. And then tell them what you want. Be firm. And confident. Don’t let them low ball you. If they really want you they will find a way. And if not? Move on to the next opportunity. Also, it’s super helpful to research average industry pay in your location. But don’t hold that to heart. I tend to always increase it and see how they react.

Not good advice. Like at all. Never be the first to throw out a number. You’re negotiating against yourself if you do and making assumptions. Once they give you the range, then present them with your number and why/how you arrived at that. I almost made this mistake when I was mid level and almost threw out a number less than what they’d budgeted. I then hit them back $15k over their max and walked away meeting in the middle at $8k over max. Had I thrown out my number I would’ve lost out on thousands of dollars.

I have been at my current job for two years. I started as a junior and was promoted. But when I was hired at my current place, I was too scared to negotiate because I needed to start paying off my student loans off and needed a job. But now that my loans are paid off and I'm not a junior anymore, I want to negotiate and be a better advocate for myself.

For websites, FairyGodBoss and Ladies Get Paid are great resources! Cindy Gallop also had a great chatbot campaign a few years back for equal pay day which literally coached you through asking for a raise. Awesome advice

Read the book ‘how to make $1000 a minute.’ It’s a short read. It sounds like a corny title, but a mentor recommended it and I’ve successfully negotiated better salary, benefits and hours three times using its methods.

If you’re in California, there are labor laws to help you navigate negotiation. If not, some things I learned are:

Never accept the initial offer over the phone unless it’s exactly what u want. Ask questions not to pry but “out of curiosity”. Say you’ll take time to think about it and mull it over.

When you talk about your work it’s not so much the years of experience as it is WHERE you worked and the relevancy of it in relation to the job (e.g digital work or traditional experience)

research the average salary for creatives in your area then gather tactical reasons why you should be making at least that much or above.

Don’t negotiate just to negotiate. Sometimes you will have to take a pay cut if it’s a better opportunity and sometimes they really do only have a certain range for the role. Be smart and proactive and do your research!

I’m 24 and have been with my current BF for a year and a half. I think he could very well be the person I marry, but I’m also panicking because I didn’t anticipate being this serious with someone this young, and I feel like there’s a lot that I didn’t get out of my system yet. I barely dated before I met him, so I’m feeling nervous that if we move forward, I’ll regret not trying more things and dating more people while I was young. Is that valid or does it not matter if I’m happy with him?
