They don’t care what platforms we enjoy making ads for… they just want to neutralize other platforms’ points of difference, so they don’t get MySpace’d.
I don’t see it that way. We actually work on ads for TT, SC and IG and they’re reel distinct in nature. I see IG on a more posed note than TT and SC. And SC vs TT differs in interaction and AR inclusion. Am I the only one noting these differences?
Lol this is less homogenous than in 2009. Everything was self aggrandizing text then. People would tweet about their bowel movements - literally.
There is a subtle difference in content on TikTok and Instagram, but if you're only monitoring influencers and brands, you won't see it.
And, yes, Instagram is turning into grandpa's guitars, much like Facebook did before it.
What's the subtle difference?
Yes I kinda hate that my IG feed is wanna be tiktok. I miss my friends’ life updates. Chill pix of dogs, babies, home interiors, vacation updates and restaurants.
All I see now are meme accounts reposting tiktok videos. I go on IG to relax and now all this “hilarious” content is giving me adrenaline I’m not ready to commit to when I’m casually checking IG before going to sleep. Oh well ranting too. Miss the olden days! 🤪
Smart! Ok something to look forward to :)
It looks like mining to me. All those connections between what we're feeling, seeing, hearing, thinking, doing:
90 billion neurons in one human brain x platforms x users x content varieties x response feelings x publishable responses = ?
^ That's probably my autism spectrum speaking. Honestly the human body is some of the best hardware in the observable universe and those eyes are Ferrari's. Reelz and TTock make perfect sense to me. It would be nice to participate more. Creative/Technical B2B is time consuming between prospecting/marketing/brand development/pre-sales/fulfillment/ongoing. When I participate I want to publish art that helps me heal and recover for the next week.
90 seconds of video art, minimum for TicTock could be a whole month of creative time for one publish. To build a progression or series could be a whole year's worth of art time that would only be 5 minutes maybe 15? The relevancy ratio would be low because my stuff is fringe/poppy classical fusions with business heavy notes and multilayer meanings. I'll probably never get a bill payed publishIing to TikTok.
It is nice to see the internet doing well though. We're blessed with variety.

The convergence of the social platforms around short format vertical video is really interesting. I think you can throw YouTube Shorts into this bucket too along with snaps, reels, TikTok. I agree that it does fee quite homogenous though important to recognise the differences in tone, usage across the different platforms. Meta feels like the poor cousin in all of these, no ideas of it’s own, paranoid about decline which is now a real thing and with the metaverse a long way off. Snap and TikTok are obviously the ones to watch.
Hot take, it's time to give IG and FB the boot. They served their purpose at the times they were made, but now the age and constant "reinvention" and "copy-catting" is getting out of hand. Audiences are leaving these platforms en-masse because the preferred content doesn't match what they actually want to consume these days, and I cannot blame them. TikTok, Snap, Reddit, YouTube, Discord, Twitch, Spotify, Fortnite, Roblox, among a few other platforms all have thriving communities and users who want more out of content and creators. Sure, I want some "bite sized" content, but not all the time. I want entertaining content that I can binge or interact with and get lost in for hours. Don't just give me a crumb of a moment to like once and forget, bring me on a journey that I can follow along for years.
You could always diversify into Triller
I miss the good old days of BBS. No company in charge, subject specific channels, mods kept the crap out 😂
