If it is the money... Why not just share that with them? Depending on how close you are to them and if you're in chummy terms with HR - just tell them this is on-par with what unemployment is providing, then just hear their reaction.
If you really don't care. Then do what the others said.
Incredible. 26.4 million people have filed for unemployment in the last five weeks and you’re still having this discussion???? Be lucky you have a damn job offer and go TF to work. And if you decline, forget using anyone there as a reference. I don’t care what CD1 said, someone that turned down work right now to stay on unemployment is going to look lazy. And I can guarantee people will talk.
Fair. I just assumed they were suffering like the rest of us but maybe they're a unicorn.
legally you aren't allowed to collect unemployment if you turn down a job. I know you are getting a lot of answers telling you that you should take the opportunity and cite made up excuses but ultimately that is fraud. I understand it's rough and not always black and white but good to remember it's not always easy to do the right thing.
Even if they’re not requiring continued job search, surely his/her employer still has the ability to protest???
Sounds like you already made up your mind
It’s more about being able to cover your expenses. I wouldn’t be able to take a low offer because of daycare cost prior to COVID. So at first I was off put by ACD1s comment. But he/she is right. You’re closing a door that may not be there later. Unemployment runs out, so unless you have money saved up it’s unnecessary risk. Why not extend your stability as long as possible. It’s also amazing you able turn something down while others are getting dropped at a lot of agencies. My agency is discussing layoffs and pay cuts.
Totally understand that, OP; however, are you able to afford to live for a few months without unemployment coming in? Because if you turn their job down and continue to file for unemployment, that’s likely what will happen.
Take the opportunity to just say No.
I think as long as you collect the money later, you can do the work now and collect unemployment now. You could just agree to have them pay you in December. Just write it into your contract. Do a Google search to double check my logic
I want to leave my company anyways and have been enjoying the time off (though they don’t know that). Do I have good reason to decline or would the permanently cut ties? I could use the time instead to look for a new job.
Work within the limitations of unemployment so you can collect your check. If your job can’t understand that, don’t do it.
The problem is that this job is with the same company that could protest his/her eligibility to receive unemployment. Honestly, sounds like they’re trying to screw you and get cheaper labor, but not sure what recourse you have considering they can protest. You might have to take the job but continue to seek other work.
I would love to have a solid job right now. Unemployment runs out. Take the stable job.
