Be relentless, you will to teach needs to be greater than their will to not learn.
My first year I taught social promotion remedial Algebra 1.
"Resistance is futile" was my teaching philosophy back then.
To make it work, you have to be consistent and relentless. Be a broken record and don't give up.
Review rules, procedures, and consequences all day... everyday. When they break a rule make them show you what they should have done. I would put desks in rows and no one would move without permission. Absolutely no group work and I would assign seats. Parents would be notified for continued negative behavior. I would suggest sending home a behavior sheet that has to be signed. No signed behavior sheet equates to silent lunch or five minutes deduction at recess. Don’t let up. You got this.
I feel you. Been there. The only thing that works for me besides trying not to be hard on myself (one year I had a class from hell and even my colleages felt sorry for me) is the build relationships with your kids. baby steps. routines. consistency. but also level with them and laugh with them too.
Thank you everyone for your advice and SUPPORT!!! I’m not only a first year teacher and in a culture that I’ve worked in before but I’m also teaching a content that these students have never ever had to take before..............Health!!! To me it’s my passion! To them “why do we need to know this I’m not going to be a doctor or anything”. But I switched things up and took an ‘interest inventory’ with many different health topics to see what THEY wanted to learn and talk about. We are currently finishing up Substance Abuse, which a personal content to many of my students.
I have made more relationships during this content lessons than I did the first few months of school.
I realized I needed to teach what they wanted and needed❤️
I guess being a Health teacher from Ohio (Ohio is the ONLY state that doesn’t have Health standards) and the ONLY Middle School Health Teacher in the district, I kinda have the freedom to do that.
But again thank you for all your support!!! I can’t tell you how much I appreciated reading your suggestions and comments. Teacher’s are absolutely the amazing!! They have the biggest most caring hearts!! This is why we are the best in the world 😉
