Relationships are literally everything. I taught in one of the poorest zip codes in the nation and I was in the same boat as you. Show them you care about them and DON'T YELL. They will test you (probably), but be the adult. A lot of what they dish out probably has nothing to do with you and they just don't know how to cope.
Movement helped a lot, like gallery walks, human, bingo, quiz quiz trade, etc. Do an interest survey and figure out what they're into, then try to connect content to that. Creativity and choices help a lot too--let them draw, act, etc.
There's not one easy answer, unfortunately, just hang in there. Use your colleagues, especially the ones that have been there.
Thank you, and I agree! I have worked very hard to build relationships with several of the more disruptive students, and it had made a huge difference! Also, talked with coaches and other teachers to collaborate. I am finding that the veteran teachers with whom I am paired do not willingly share, offer advice or otherwise. As a first year teacher, I feel so clueless.
I agree relationships is everting. You have not been given all of the tools you need to step in and be perfect year one. No one is! Teaching is a craft am that you have to work at. Love your kids no matter what and know that they NEED you to be a champion for them. Yearn to learn as much as you can about classroom management, differentiation, and don’t forget to make positive contacts home on purpose for those challenging students. Reach out to others for advise and keep your chin up!
Me too! First year at a Kentucky middle school, I have no words. Nothing works. There has to be a solution...help!
Thank you everyone for your advice and SUPPORT!!! I’m not only a first year teacher and in a culture that I’ve worked in before but I’m also teaching a content that these students have never ever had to take before..............Health!!! To me it’s my passion! To them “why do we need to know this I’m not going to be a doctor or anything”. But I switched things up and took an ‘interest inventory’ with many different health topics to see what THEY wanted to learn and talk about. We are currently finishing up Substance Abuse, which a personal content to many of my students.
I have made more relationships during this content lessons than I did the first few months of school.
I realized I needed to teach what they wanted and needed❤️
I guess being a Health teacher from Ohio (Ohio is the ONLY state that doesn’t have Health standards) and the ONLY Middle School Health Teacher in the district, I kinda have the freedom to do that.
But again thank you for all your support!!! I can’t tell you how much I appreciated reading your suggestions and comments. Teacher’s are absolutely the amazing!! They have the biggest most caring hearts!! This is why we are the best in the world 😉
I’m hosting a free webinar on classroom management. You’ll have strategies to take with you after the webinar, PLUS free access to my classroom management course. Would this be something you’d be interested in?
