Left just shy of 3 years in. The driving forces were: (1) burnout/mental health; (2) being left off important client calls and then late night assignment requests with 1 day turnaround with 0 regard for my other ongoing matters; (3) a part-time secundment with a major client which showed me how much ownership, responsibility, and control you typically have in-house; and (4) the right opportunity to go in-house and not too terrible of a pay cut.

Left right at 3 years to go to a midsize firm. I worked for a toxic partner and I could not stand the hours. Life was a slog with the only real upside being my bank account, which I would check as consolation, but that only lasts so long. Looking back, there was no partner who I would have traded places with, so I wasn't headed in a direction I wanted. There are so many interesting and wonderful things in this life and I've never been content dedicating so much of my life to one thing.

You make a very good point here. When you realize there is no partner with whom you’d trade places, it speaks volumes.

About to. Trying. 2 years in. Would like a life, or more of one at least.

2nd years unite! Same. Can’t wait. Have no life lol. Are you all looking? And if so have you received any feedback from interviews etc.

9 years in. Worked with a psychotic partner and practice group didn’t give a damn that he drove out 10+ lawyers. Was also sick of the lip service about things like retention and development, and was over partners ruining my weekends and expecting me to be on call 24/7 even though I had reduced hours.

like

No I wasn’t. I knew I didn’t want to make partner but just ended up staying a firm because of pay, wanting to have a baby, not knowing what I wanted to do next, insecurity/uncertainty/fear, and staying busy enough to not bother looking. Finally figured out my career goals last year and started prioritizing applying to in house positions.

12 years in. To co-found a real estate private equity firm. I should have left sooner.

DM me. I could talk about CRE and even bankruptcy forever!

Seconded at my third year. Had previously been a senior transactional paralegal for 10 years so biglaw held no mystique for me. Knew a good gig when I saw it. Have been in corp/ sec in tech ever since.

Incredible. Good for you. In what industry?! What group were you in when you were at the firm?

2 years. I left because I had horrible burn out.

What industry did you go in-house to?

I have accepted an offer for the role of Director of Data Science & Analytics and I'll be working with old colleagues. I am very excited. I haven't given notice yet because I am waiting for the background check to complete, but my boss just asked me about traveling to a meeting in November. I start at the new job Oct 25. I'm really struggling for how to respond. If I were not leaving it is absolutely a meeting I should be at. I don't want to respond with a lie. Any dvice on how to respond?
