OP I know how you feel. I'm in DD too and have had endless discussions with colleagues about how it seems our strategies aren't as ambitious or cutting edge. But then again - I can't remember the last time a client asked (or warranted) for a cutting edge ambition. Most of the time they are still figuring out how to run a basic website or digital function. I think it comes back to the types of large, cash rich, slow moving companies that turn to consulting firms for help. Just my 0.02.
Consulting makes you dumber 🙄
Also another difference I noticed between the people I met vs the general consultants I run into NYC, Boston, Chicago etc. is that these startup types are all willing to forego any sort of short term 'success or status' and defer that to a later age for the opportunity to make it big. Met one guy from Stanford who is still eating ramen noodles everyday and sleeps in a sleeping bag in his friends 500 sqft studio.
Yeah but is it consulting, or the nature of our largely inefficient and outdated clients? It might be my luck, but I've only worked with maybe 2 clients in the past 5 years that have really pushed the boundaries.
Startups heavy in data sciences (no not plugging and chugging away on tableau) but unique startups focusing on DNA sequencing and cancer research using data sciences, start ups focused on next generation fintech applications, etc. just too many to name. Most had a background in mathematics, engineering, and software engineering. Some entrepreneurs even had phds in the hard sciences.
Tough to say what value soft skilled consultants bring to the table.
Good discussion. My husband is successful in tech and as someone new to consulting post mba I have definitely felt like I was wasting my time knowing what he does every day.
