Went to an M7 with the goal of moving into consulting. While it's true that the 'facts' I learned easily could have been learned online in a month or two, there are a few things that were completely worth the cost for me:
- The network of smart talented people from a variety of industries and backgrounds
- Shifting the way I thought to a more strategic and structured fashion, which really only happens when you immerse yourself in that sort of culture day in and day out
- The diversity of experiences, whether it was travel within a class, with friends, or simply approaching a business problem from a different lens. Those have made me a more interesting and well-rounded person, which is critical at higher management levels.
Like all things in life, MBA is a sliding scale. What you get out of it depends on your background and where you are in your career. If you spent, 2 years at mck and then 2 years at a PE shop or hedge fund, you are entering your MBA with already a salary that is 2-3x an average post mba salary from hbs. How you redeem your MBA is going to be very different than someone who spent 2 years working at teach for America and is transitioning into a more traditional business career. In the latter, you might be using your MBA to get a job at mckinsey while some former mck folks have sailed on 4 years prior..
Thanks good will hunting. Those apples were delicious.
Scratching my head at how you ended up at EY with a h/s/w degree.
OP, it's not your fault!
You ok, ATK?
Getting an MBA gets you a ton of connections. That's part of what you pay for, access.
...its not your fault.
It's not your fault.

"HSW" = went to Wharton. Like saying I work at one of MBBD.
Spoiler alert: OP went for H/S/W MBA to get into MBB but is now sour that didn't work out.
Is anyone else scared that while you're in B school a recession will hit and you'll be left jobless?
Anyone else convinced these anti-MBA posts are from people who don't have MBAs?
...because they didn't get in?
...because of low GMAT scores?
...and now have inferiority complexes?
I never get these "everything you need to know you can get from Google" comments. Maybe I'm not smart enough to know everything I need to know? Maybe, I get my money's worth when I have PhDs sit down and walk me through the various pros/cons of certain corp strategies? In any case, getting my MBA got me a 50% raise and opened up a whole new career for me, and I doubt "just googling it" would have done the trick.
I went to H/S/W - everyone is smart and the classes provoke thought, but it's all about who you meet and know. We (probably) all would be successful without an MBA - 85% are type A
^says the guy who resents his mba 🙄
It depends on where you get your MBA from. I graduated from a top 5 school and I don't regret it.
Are all ATKs assholes?
I'm am so bummed that no one caught the joke, atk2. Have you guys really watched all of good will hunting?
Best two years of my life. By far.
If you still think business is about what you know, then you definitely need to go back and get an MBA. Ironic, huh? Anyway, apart from the connections an MBA gives you (and other things not least of which is learning) having been passed through another exclusive filter and presumably had your ideas tested through a couple more years of academia gives you Credibility. And the internet doesnt give you that. Then again, you think fb is a good place to voice an opinion like this so maybe you are just a born dumb ass.
