Spouse thinks we should wear a face mask (like the serious N95 variety) when we leave the house to get essential groceries. Is it ethical to buy one when health care workers need them?

I have a box of N95 masks and have worn them when going to the doctor and grocery store. With that being said, I’m high risk pregnancy and don’t want to take any chances. However, I am considering only keeping what I need and donating the rest.

Thanks, MC1. Wild times

I can tell you I know several medical workers that are very worried about working without protective gear. My sister is trying to make her own mask so she can go to work and help people. Also keep in mind only nurses, doctors, NP’s, PA’s make livable wages. Many of the support staff are under $20hr. So if your grocery trip is more important than receiving medical help enjoy the mask, just keep in mind my sister may be at home sick instead of saving your life.

Unless you’re a high risk group, just stay 6’ away from others. Medical professionals need them more.

As long as you don’t hoard them, I think wearing one yourself helps protect the community and indirectly healthcare workers. The government should step in and help healthcare workers accrue these things at larger-scale.

@KPMG 3. You're not "healthy" then. If you did not have any previous or underlying issues, that would be "healthy." A mild, congenital heart issue is something to worry about and take precaution with. People who have no worry of immunocompromise or any other form of illness/disease/some sort of defect are those who are healthy and need not worry.

No. There is an obvious shortage and others need them more than you do.

Wear one!!!!! If you have them wear them. Anybody who is saying don’t, don’t have them for themselves.

like

We have ones to donate. But we’re keeping 2 in case we get sick and have to go the the hospital.

Pull a scarf across your face and grow a pair.

Everyone in Asia wears them and they’ve done a pretty good job at stopping this virus, I vote wear it if you can.

Wear if there’s a surplus in supply, but there are mass shortages where medical workers don’t have enough for the existing bolus of patients. The best thing you can do: donate the masks you have and stay home.

I’m not really answering the question here, but I feel like there’s almost a stigma against “normal” people wearing masks now...I was advised to wear one by my doctor due to a congenital heart issue, and so was my father who recently beat cancer. We both look like normal, healthy people, but I’m frankly nervous about wearing a mask in public, for fear that someone will confront me about it and say I should’ve saved it for a doctor or a nurse.

like

I’m scared I’ll get beat

stitch one at home and wear that. Won’t be n95 but atleast will prevent you from touching your face and MAY be stop the 🦠 as well

like

Unless you’re high risk, I would donate it. Follow all other recommendations from the CDC to help reduce your risk.

like

You don’t need one unless you are caring for someone with the virus according to the WHO

I have 2 boxes of gloves and masks that I tried to donate but because they were open, the hospitals here cannot take them. I’m going to see if other first responders might want them instead or as a last resort if our maintenance people in our building would want them.

I’m in NYC. I am happy to give to hospitals, can you please pm me?

Wear it, if your spouse gets sick and dies those nurses that need it won't care about you or your emotions. Similarly, if they die you won't give a crap about them either since you don't know them. They picked their profession, they choose the risk, you did not. It's tough, it's not politically correct, and people here won't like to hear it but if you asked anyone here would they rather see their spouse die or a random nurse die you bet EVERYONE here would pick random nurse. Let the government handle it, it's not like your box of masks is gonna help the millions that we need now.

OP - as a heart-heart, you should do what feels like the right choice for you. Your mask could protect you and those around you in case you are infected. In a healthcare setting, a single mask would last a single patient visit. You could reuse your N95 with careful infrequent use (as long as it stays dry, and you wash your hands after touching the outer surface). I struggled with the same question, but I already had a box of masks from several months back. My husband is a doctor, making it likely that both of us and our three kids already have the virus, without significant symptoms. I also care for aging parents and grandparents so I have to wear a mask around them. I support individuals using masks when necessary, and I absolutely hope for proper protection to become available for doctors ASAP.

My mom is a doctor who just paid $200 of her own money for ten N95 masks as her office doesn’t have any... If you don’t have a legitimate reason for wearing them, please donate them

Wear them. I survived SARS in HK and there is a reason why people in Asia wearing them. CDC asks us not to wear mask coz there is none in the market. Lots of people bought them all from the drug stores/ homedepot/ Lowe’s the past two months and shipped it back HK/ China/ japan. If you have them, wear it. If you have more, donate them. I knew this would hit US. I got few boxes for myself and since we got the stay at home order now and I’m not leaving my home, I just keep one box and donated the rest to hospital.

Lol NO..This is one of the reasons why there’s a mask shortage for our medical professionals

I just wrap a scarf around my mouth and nose when going out and make sure I wash it when I get home.
