You should check out a book called “So You’re Working at Anomaly: How to make friends volume 1”
I am a newer CW too OP!!! Can you DM on this thing? Can we get a drink?!
When there's a moment to talk, ask people questions about themselves. Where did they grow up? Where did they work before? What are their favorite places to grab lunch. Where did they buy the outfit? People like to talk about themselves or offer opinions. Don't offer much about yourself, or your opinions right away. Just show curiosity about them. Eventually they will ask about you. But they'll like you for showing interest in them.
I use the outfit thing constantly!! People like compliments 😜
Been there. Takes about 6 months. People cycle through agencies, so work cliques change constantly.
Also remember this when someone new starts! They’re probably feeling the same way.
How long have you been there? I totally get this - I’m a freelancer and work in-house at agencies a lot, sometimes on very quick projects, so I constantly have that ‘new kid’ feeling.
I’d give it a bit more time - as someone who cycles in and out, I only feel at home and ‘part of’ a place if I’m there for several months. Hang in there! Try to have lunch with people, that’s always a start - it will happen naturally with some more time.
Hang in there OP. I know that feel.
Lol totally get this... went from one environment where I had so many friends to a new city where I knew few people with a “friendly” team (that already had work bffs and didnt really want to bother with me)
But hang in there, i promise it gets better!! Its been 4 months and i have a few more friends/people i like talking to... put yourself out there a little if you can? Are there events at your agency you can attend? Also, do you have an art director partner? At my agency every copywriter is partnered up and they stick together like crazy
If there is any version of a culture or events committee get on that. As soon as you become the curator of fun, people will look at you differently. Also get to know the head of new business and offer to help. Even if you are working after hours you will be working closely with people. And if you end up winning the business the whole agency will change around that new account and you’ll be part of it.
That’s actually a great idea
Start your own crew with all the underdogs... make great friends this way!
Float around, enjoy the peace, and build airtight rapport with the E/VP/C-Suite.
Everyone changes jobs so often in our industry, I think it makes people a bit hesitant to get attached at first. It just takes time, that's all.
