Started a new job this week and it’s super strange meeting people virtually. Not sure if there’s another thread out there about this but does anyone have any tips? I’m waiting until a non holiday week to reach out to people for a quick chat, but it feels so not personable

I would be honest about it! Let your new teammates know that it’s hard and uncomfortable to join a company while everyone is remote, and ask if they’d want to chat so you can get to know people. If possible, a group of you and 2-3 other people can make the conversation more natural. I’ve had people join my company in the last few weeks, and I’ve really felt for anyone who sent a message like this. I totally understand how hard it must be and was happy to chat, but I think I might have been less likely to say yes if they hadn’t explicitly acknowledged that it was hard to meet people right now and they were hoping to find some friendly faces.

I’m 9 months in to a new job, never met my team. Reiterating how bizarre this all is helped. Get ready for lots of zoom calls to get to know your coworkers.

Coming from the other side of it having hired a few people remotely has also been tough. We all want to be able to meet new team members and have a more personal welcome. I know on my end, I am so grateful for all new hires and want to make time to get to know them better! Definitely let your team members know how weird it is—it’s a pretty good ice-breaker and it humanizes things for sure. Congrats on the new job too!

100% agree w the above, having made some virtual hires. Personally I go out of my way to connect and chatter to help remote ppl build culture and know where they stand. But I also think lots of ppl are floundering and want to do better — if you tell your manager/team you’re feeling disconnected (esp if they know what in person connection feels like) they will prob jump at the chance to help you plug in

I’m a fellow covid hire, it is truly weird. I’d set up 30 min 1:1’s with your teammates to get to know them, I liked to ask them how we could best work together and what I could do to immediately help them. Then from there you can naturally slip into some more personal things, like how long have you been with the agency? What did you work on before this? Where are you working out of right now?

Do a weekly Friday lunch where you can casually chat and meet other people, team set.

Spinoff question... I know FMLA technically only covers you if you've worked for 12 months at your employer but has anyone actually had their employer say "sorry you we only here for 10 months so you can take your two weeks of accrued vacation, after that we'll expect you back." ? Since FMLA is unpaid anyway, I would imagine most employers would at least let you have unpaid time off.

Had an offer for 30% more , a promotion to manager, extra week of vacation to switch firms. I love where I am at with my clients and there is a lot of potential there. Should I stay the course?

Does anyone else find it difficult to ask for time off? I haven’t taken a “vacation day” since February, billed 185+ hour months consistently through the pandemic (exceeded hours for 2020 bonus eligibility), and am feeling pretty burnt out. It’s hard because other associates in my department haven’t really taken any time off either (or it has been a day or two sporadically). Would really love to take some days over Christmas to recharge but I’m nervous about perception.

Then there was another research task which I also struggled with (reading but not processing) that made me doubt my capability. I had depression/anxiety last year but thought I recovered. (cont.)
