move on or stay. I’m not completely unhappy but also not very excited or motivated by my current role. One complicating factor is my husband and I maybe moving in about a year and a half - my husband is a medical resident and will be looking for an attending job this upcoming year.
I think it’s very fair to look for a new position. 8 months is enough time to know it’s not a good fit. You don’t have to stay in a job, as long as you can articulate the reason why you didn’t work there for that long. And the old way of staying at a job for at least a year because of your resume is not really practical anymore. Life is too short to not be happy
Rising Star
Personally, I’d stick it out, particularly because of the likely impending move.
For what it’s worth, I spent most of my career doing the same kind of transactional work for different clients. At one point it was almost exclusively hotel transactions. Then senior housing transactions. Then ski resorts. Then senior housing again. Then some more hotels. Not all of the clients were the same, but there was overlap on both the client contacts overlapped and the substance of the transactions.
I did that work for 20 years and felt as if I was constantly growing over that time.
But I also hated my job at times. During those times, I reminded myself that I was a modern day Hunter gatherer, and just as our forbearers didn’t need to love hunting or gathering, I didn’t need to always love my form of hunting and gathering either. And at least I’m not in danger of being mauled by a bear while doing it.
Not saying that you should just grin and bear it forever, but I’d suggest that when dealing with this in the short term while your spouses works through the issues that will impact your landing place, it might be a perspective that helps you middle through in the short term.
In the same boat. I think I’ll try to switch practice areas within my firm before I lateral anywhere else
I just switched into the current practice from three years as an in-house generalists - it was advertised as corporate associate position with some real estate work but I’m doing like 85% commercial leasing and i’m not loving it
What practice group are you in?
Currently RE transactional/corporate/business transaction, but I was an in-house generalist for 3 years prior to joining my current firm.
I’d stick it out only because of the move. Job searches are stressful and why do it just to have to do it again. Maybe look for remote positions now.
