Started at my firm 4 months ago, and just found out my SO got a promotion that would require us to move across the country (we’re not married). Advice for asking to be transferred/go remote? Cont.

Do you regularly travel for work? If so, and if you’re big 4 I don’t think there would be a problem. We spend most of our time on the road. Where you sleep on a Friday/Sat/Sun shouldn’t phase them

I’d still ask the question. Travel is built into the model.

Just lay it out to them and ask. You don’t have to say I’m moving or I quit, you can just say you’d like to understand your options. Most big firms don’t really care where you are as long as you’re near a major airport, but there can be exceptions. When I was at PwC I knew someone who was in the Chicago office but lived in Indiana, about a 3 hour drive from O’Hare. I’ve seen people in the Minneapolis office sometimes included in Chicago office events because the Minneapolis office was too small to plan their own. If you were in DC working on Federal projects it would probably be a bigger issue. There can be side effects if your firm does a lot of internal things by office and you are essentially cut off from your group, but there are often ways to manage that. In any case, it’s better to know your options and the process you’d have to follow than to try to guess.

smart

Doesn’t hurt to ask now about options. Be prepared it may take some time and your SO may need to move there first while you do long distance for a bit. For example the firm may recommend you doing a project in new practice or with people in other city to help you build some relationships there and make sure it’s a good fit before finalizing the transfer. Even if it’s not mandatory, this would be helpful so you know a couple people when you start in a new office. Or they might try to put you up for more travel projects, but that won’t take effect until your current thing ends. Or if the plan is that you continue working with the same practice and people but travel to client as needed, the suggestion may be you stay for another few months to a year so you’ve built some solid relationships in person first before transferring.

rude

My firm has a very small presence in the city I would be moving to and none of them are in my specific practice. I work from the office when I’m not on travel projects, which means I mostly work from the office as our firm is mostly local in my current location, though the rest of the firm tends to travel M-Th. I’m nervous my request will be denied and then I’ll have to look for a new job months after starting

I did this. Got hired for a specific local project in January. In April, wife accepts an offer to work 800 miles away, starting in August. I notify boss, start looking for projects, get staffed on one, start the traveling life. Not a big deal at all for anyone involved.

I'm a first year and just received a raise, even though I haven't been at the firm for a year yet. It's a great amount, and I'm so thankful. The partners told me in person but I'm just wondering if I should ask them to put it in writing, just to confirm it and in case anything happens down the road? If I learned anything as an attorney, it's to always have everything in writing lol

Horrible headshots coping mechanisms - lay it on me. The firm decided to schedule new headshots at the worst possible time (WFH 15 I’m struggling to get off, none of my suits fit, my hair girl accidentally took my blonde too dark). Proofs came back and they are godawful - the photographer put me in the most awkward positions, so I look uncomfortable AND like an overstuffed sausage. I want to asinine for reshoots but I’m worried he’s going to make the exact same errors.
