With MBA and CFA why and how are you working for free?

Time to find a PAYING job as opposed to volunteering for free ASAP!

Have an open conversation with the partner and put a road map with him to understand where you fit in the organization and if he's willing to offer you a paid role. Make sure you get everything in writing and that he meets his commitments. If he's not capable to hire you, then would he be willing to help you network and introduce you to his contacts for potential roles? If that's also out of the question, use this opportunity to build your resume and keep searching for other roles. Some of those PE types are good at making you work for free by giving you false promises of introductions or potential equity. Don't assume that they will help you with either unless you see concrete effort on his part. Don't get sucked into it if his intention is to use you. Konw your worth, you deserve better.

Thanks for this man ♥️💪🏻

Unless you’re having direct, regular conversations about whether this is gonna lead to something full time, and when, then no it’s not worth it. You’re giving them free work.

like

I mean, the one thing that IS valuable is that you're presumably getting real PE experience, which will put you ahead of most candidates when you do apply for a paying PE job. I don't suggest this long term, but if PE is your career of choice, then 3-6 months of unpaid work will not matter long-term. Do you think you can get a great reference from this guy? That said, you're probably getting the short end of this unpaid role gig. Can you survive (i.e. pay living costs) in the interim?

It wont be worth it. Even once they have the funds to hire an associate they likely will let you go because they know there will be long term awkwardness / resentment. This is what my firm did initially so anecdotal evidence only. See if you can track down other ppl who did a similar route at other places on LinkedIn and ask them.

Thanks for the replies guys. I Initially took the role coz i wasn't getting anything substantial at the time. Then this fucking pandemic hit and everything went downhill. I gave my honest effort in the beginning 2 months but by that time we were in deep shit. Instead of running live deals, I've learnt a lot about life and outlook of different people during this pandemic. Anyway, i am going to talk to the partner today and tell him how it has been. Like one poster said in the comments, This is the exact opposite of the Canadian dream. I chose Canada coz it was much safer (All aspects, including racism) and more predictable than the US. A lot of my friends have landed good jobs before and even in the pandemic, but i couldn't land one despite top education and personality. Anyway, It is what it is. Stay safe guys and do well ! 💪🏻

I am the guy who wrote about the “””canadian dream””” - good stuff, huh? Update us on how it goes. You did make 5 grand last year I hope? Just get trudeaubux, more than what apparently people get paid in PE now.

like

Thanks for the input guys. Your support is really appreciated. The competition is tougher than ever now and jobs are only 20% of what they used to be.

I mean there are far less jobs in the market and the competition is much higher

It went fine. I clearly told him what the situation was, asked him for recommendations and ended on a good note. I did not ask for money nor did he bring the topic up. This whole experience has solidified a lot of my belief in how some people are. I didn't make 5k last year, but am getting the $1250 student benefit, so yeah Trudeaubux

Currently in the US but interviewing for a UK-based firm and role. The comp level they are throwing around is £250k TC. Is this reasonable for a Director-level role with 12 YOE? My comparator would be wait 18-24mo to become a consulting partner - in the US that starts at $450k/£325k. For the purposes of this question, assume I’m optimizing for initial comp, not long term potential, and not livability, Intl experience, WLB, CoL etc. Thanks!
