Started in tax full time last year. I’m feeling very unfulfilled and unhappy with my decision. The hours are LONG and the pay is not what I thought it would be. I’m trying to stay positive but I’m truly dying inside and out and no one cares. I have no CPA or masters. If I leave any idea what kind of options there are out there or how to market myself. I think I’m a personable person and I good worker but I’m not sure people will look past not having CPA coming from PA. Thoughts?

I would give it another year before giving up on the career. Your first year is always a really hard adjustment and when you combine it with the disaster that is 2020, this year is bad for even us optimists.

Ouch

You are at the beginning of your career, so any change shouldn’t be hard. If you don’t like tax, don’t waist your time on it. Try other jobs, for example, in finance or business analytics. Good luck, don’t settle for something you don’t like. If you are not planning to stay in accounting/tax, I wouldn’t be concern about not having CPA.

like

You can go into industry, but my advice is tough it out for a while for the exp and get your CPA. That will widen your exit opportunities.

I would quit. Take the CPA, and then find a job.

The model in Deloitte Tax has shifted the past few years to a constant busy season model so they won’t pass the CPA exam that way staying here. They’re probably under 26 so they can stay on there parents health insurance and for income - I don’t know. They could cash out there 401k with 1 year of contributions they have in there penalty free under the CARES Act.

If you don’t have an interest in Tax as the OP stated, I don’t see why you would stay. Deloitte Tax doesn’t develop or invest it’s people as it once did in the day.

How is the pay not what you thought? 1 year in you expected a huge raise? I think your expectations are out of line. Starting any job you need to prove yourself and things will be difficult.

See if you can gain a greater understanding about what the job will be once you get some experience. No one wants to stay a preparer in tax but the job changes drastically as you rise through the ranks.

I’m sorry for the life of me I can’t get behind the just stick it out mentality. I did make it to Senior to leave at 6 figures, which honestly if you truly want to stay in tax, the exit opportunities are better at senior. But when I was leaving, everyone was getting on me about staying until manager and how I would be outearned eventually, but I wasn’t just about to spend 5+ more years of my life ruining all of my relationships and being miserable for more money. Honestly I make more than enough to be happy now and life without the big4 level of stress is so much better.

Are you eligible to sit for the CPA exam? If so, I'd try to focus on that, even if it means having even less of a life for a while. Your exit opportunities will significantly expand, so it will be worth it. It will just be a lot for a while. (No one cares about a masters. That only helps you sit for the CPA exam.)

If you aren't eligible for the CPA exam, maybe study for the Enrolled Agent exam. Some lines of service will put a bit of value on it, but not all. It doesn't really help with exit opportunities, though.

I think I might just have to push through and get CPA because I don’t see a reasonable way to exit without having CPA on my resume after public accounting. I’m also going to look at other fields or groups within Deloitte. Thank you!!

I have a quandary to share. My work exp has been tech heavy, starting as a software developer for 8 years; outgrew that. Then for the last 4 years, DevOps, specializing in the Cloud, IaC and GitOps. The tech parts (sans human) feel empty sometimes, and I want to try out transitioning into product. As DevOps, I have loved my share of helping internal customers (dev teams) as well as being an advisor. I love unsticking people. Is it possible to market that for job desc that asks for mgmt exp?

Okay so I’m frustrated and would appreciate any insight to the scenario below.

HR provides an initial offer.
I asked to elaborate on complete benefits package ie conferences, CEU reimbursement (no negotiation yet)
She needs to ask the CEO (not sure why she couldn’t ask the senior HR manager)
I state my salary expectations based on research, experience, education.
She has to talk to the CEO again to find out what is negotiable within the overall package
What’s going on? Ur job is to negotiate?

Generally curious how many companies offer phone reimbursement? My last gig did not but the current one does.
