That seems realllly high. Where are you located? I’m in a high COL city and ranges were closer to 40-50k. Planning on doing a nanny share to reduce that
If you look in Naperville, there’s a ton of highly qualified nannies that work for 10-15/hr for 1 kid and an additional 2-3/hr for a second kid. I bet some of them are willing to travel to the city if you provide them half of the Chicago rate. Just post it as up to 50 hrs per week, offering 40-45k.
@ACN1, check out the local Naperville and west suburb Facebook groups. A lot of the nannies are ones who work for various families for years and then the kids age out so they look for a new family. A lot of the times it’s the families posting Bc they want their nanny to land somewhere great. My kiddo goes to a daycare/preschool so admittedly I’ve never hired one and I will say that actually highly qualified ones go fast now that I’m actually thinking about the last time I saw a post for one. They do take less than the care.com sites though and often get paid under the table. The ones who are less qualified or are college girls are more abundant and will take less, so totally fair. Check the Facebook groups though, a lot of western suburb moms use nannies and know of other good ones from the looks of it!
@ACN2 there’s a naperville IL moms network group on FB, a naperville work from home moms, a plainfield moms, and I think aurora (but not sure about that last one). I like a lot of them Bc they have good nanny recs as well as recs for everything under the sun (best manicure location, hair stylists, home contractors, landscapers, etc). You name it, those ladies are all over it, it’s like a better yelp. 😬
... going rate in our city. Is that really what I should be prepared to pay? We can technically afford it, I just can’t believe it’s so expensive. Does everyone else just pay under the table? What’s the worst that can happen? We don’t want to do a nanny share even though we realize that is one way to cut the cost. I just can’t help but feel like $80k per year is an awful lot to have our little girl looked after
Would you consider an au pair? They are about $18k...$22k if you consider things like utilities, insurance, food etc.
In chicago. If we pay under the table it’s only $50k... I mean we’re not looking to scam anyone. But you have to be a seriously high earning couple to make it worth it. Not ready to do a live in our au pair yet (we live in a two bedroom apartment now... down the line we do plan to explore live ins when we have a house)
B1 do you pay taxes and the nanny’s take home was $50k? Or it was $50k cost to you and after taxes nanny took home a lot less?
Bag, where are you? Total cost for me is a little over 50k. Outside of dc. We pay $17.50/hr on average (average between regular wage and overtime wage) for 50 hours plus her monthly health insurance of 275 a month.
What wage range are they looking for? Here it’s $18-$25/hr
D1, yes but is that net or gross of taxes? Makes a huge difference...
So backing out employer taxes and overtime it looks like you’re doing ~$25/hour base, or else offering some other big perks? I would think this is a pretty high end rate for Chicago but not insane. I live in a lower cost city and we pay on the books to the tune of $60k (though nanny only takes home ~$45k after all the taxes).
My bigger question is how you manage at BCG with only 50 hours of childcare...
D1, it costs me around 50k including my employer taxes. The wages I quoted are the nanny’s wages before taxes. I’m surprised that Chicago would be that much higher than dc
^^that 40-45k was assuming you paid cash without reporting, prob bump it up a bit for reported wages, but a lot of western suburb nannies would still jump at it for guaranteed hours.
Vp I’m in the far western burbs and I can get a nanny for $11/$12 but I wouldn’t say highly qualified (but I wfh so I’m constantly supervising). I see people in a Naperville nanny site, posting jobs for the $18 hr range in Naperville/hinsdale area. I feel like it might be challenging to convince someone to do the commute to Chicago when they can get $18 hr out this way. Unless the jobs I’m seeing are just on the higher end.
@VP, Biz — what are the FB groups? Do they have any specific to working moms? Thanks for sharing!
Does that include an agency fee? Doesn't sound toooo far off I guess for good experience and 50 hrs/week.
$80k is a lot - but sounds roughly right if you’re paying on the books in a high COL city. Going rate in Boston is $18-20/hour, without taxes (or overtime if you’re doing >40hrs/wk)
Since I needed 50 hours a week, I negotiated an average rate (eg $19/hr) and guaranteed 50 hours. Then I backed into the wage and overtime ($15/hr regular, $24.50 overtime). Finally I proposed paying her insurance (which isn’t taxable for either of us) and dropped the average rate to $17.50. I’m in a high cost city (average rate is $18-22/hr) but I’m spending about 55-60k including taxes. If you are looking at 80k you must be doing time and a half on top of the 18-25 an hour. None of the nannies (including the ones I interviewed through a service were expecting that)
Bcg, are you saying the nannies expect they will receive 18-20 an hour after taxes are taken out? That definitely isn’t the expectation in DC
We’re in Chicago and pay $17.50/hour on the books for one baby. A few agencies told me I had to be paying $20, but our nanny is young (25) and does extra babysitting gigs on the side so she’s happy. When I was interviewing it seemed that if you could offer full-time employment with one kid you can definitely find options between $15-20/hour. I know lots of people pay off the books but the advice I received is that you want a nanny that really considers this her full time position and wants to be earning legally so she can rent an apt or lease a car.
