Personally, I plan on buying a home in the next 6 months. So I’m sitting on a large pile of cash in HYSAs for my down payment and emergency fund generally. The rule of thumb typically is don’t invest money you are going to spend in the next year or so, because there is a better chance of losing money in the short term as opposed to investing the money for 3-5 years. The downside to investing money you want to use for a house is that when the housing market goes down, the stock market likely will too (at least at first), so your investments will lose value when you want to pull them out to buy the home. If you think it’ll be closer to 5 years before you buy, there isn’t an issue investing the money until you are close to ready to buy. Index funds are a great and cheap way to invest the money. I personally use S&P indexes over total market ones, but that is my preference personally. Tldr: if buying in next year, hold in cash/savings account. If buying in 5 years, invest.

Is it ok if I put $20K in VTSAX, in a normal investing account, just so if I want to pull out and use the money, I can. Is that fine, what are the drawbacks to this? I don’t want to put more into a Roth IRA or IRA because I want the ability to invest and use that money if need be

That does not apply to contributions. They can be withdrawn at any time

Have about ~25k sitting in ROTH TSP. Calculators forecast that’ll be worth about north of~200k by the time I hit retirement at an average rate of 10% growth. Would it make more sense to roll it over into employer (Vangaurd) 401k plan to have more buying power of certain funds? Or are the expense fees that good and low in the TSP that I should just keep it in place?

How tough is it to break into a FAANG PM role at mid-level if you have less prestigious experience?
