Started working a week after graduating last May. Was on track to be one of the top staff performers and then COVID hit. Since working from home I am one of the lowest performers. Anxiety and stress are crippling my ability to succeed. I have social anxiety which makes wfh communication extremely difficult.

Managers - how much patience would you have with someone who was doing well pre-pandemic but has been struggling ever since? Should I start planning for a new job? (In case I get fired)

Always be prepared to be fired, regardless of the circumstance.

Is it possible you’re overthinking this or do you have proof you’re one of the lowest performers? I can understand the anxiety issue with communication, because I have had that before. However it’s almost always because I have anxiety about dealing with the person I have to communicate with. If I work well with my team then I have no anxiety about communicating with them. Are you okay working with your management team? If not then maybe it’s time to start planning for a new job regardless, because it’s very hard to work long term with people who make you feel anxious.

Here’s my tip: please shut off the news. Bring your whole self to work. And take necessary mental breaks. I know working from home makes it so difficult to separate work and life, but we have to find a way for our sanity. Sanity = focus and higher performance.

I would reach out to a manager/partner to check in and see how things are going. Perhaps it isn’t as bad as you think. But even if it is it will show you want to get better.

Perhaps you’re setting unrealistic expectations for yourself? You cannot be a top staff performer right off the bat, it takes a solid year or two to get a real grasp of things. Not sure how you can assess that you were “on track” to be a top performer if you started after COVID. Just be patient and don’t let all of this performance noise affect you. Your first year you’re expected and encouraged to watch and learn - if you try too hard you’re just going to make your life and your senior’s life harder. Sorry don’t mean to be harsh but you cannot come into this job with a sense of entitlement, for whatever reason. It will catch up to you fast. Speaking from experience.

I'm not hung up on PE/buy side exits, not closed off but nbd. Would be just as happy to stay and make MD (or exit into corp dev if I want an easier life when I'm older)

My dilemma:

I'm at a LMM investment bank. Can get crazy sometimes, but otherwise chill. Typically done around 7-9 pm, had maybe three 1 am nights. Haven't worked a weekend in over a month. Fridays almost always done at 5 pm.

Have an offer at a reputable MM bank but probably pretty sweaty. Worth the move?

Been feeling very low for a very long time. Working with a Big Four for 7+ years (since graduation) and was excited to join consulting as I get easily bored, wanted to grow at an exponential scale and wanted to travel for work. Cut to now, though I am well sought after for my skills and consistently got 25%+ bonus, I feel I have achieved nothing cuz I didn't get the promotions that I worked for, people have been chosen over me for overseas travel and destroyed my social life. Venting only! :)

Should I stay in my role a bit longer to gain experience or I am not able to find remote or hybrid matching my profile. Your advice and comments are much appreciated.
