No set time for moving up. It is performance based - usually, however this is an ageist business. No matter what anyone says it will be harder for her because of her age. I got in at 45 and because of related experience started higher up the chain. Definitely seeing the ageism now even with a title.
If you’re 25-40, sure. As it was my whole life. I actually still look really young and people are really surprised when I tell them how ‘old’ I am, as though my strategic brain or my creativity should be dried up by now, or I should at least look ‘old.’ Sucks. But lying about or avoiding my age seems like I’m just falling into that trap even more. 🥴😖
From real estate to advertising, but worried about taking a pay cut and how long that would last
Definitely performance based. I went from AE to SAE to AS in 5 years. Been an AS for about 2 years and I think my boss is expecting me to make an aggressive push towards AD in the next 1-2 years; meanwhile, I’m trying to plan an exit strategy from this industry.
Your title progression is 100% on track with general industry standards for years of experience and advancement. Just FYI. AAE through AS is the junior stage of the career. At AD and above it starts to vary more based on performance.
I say this as a recruiter and many years of former account.
This has been really helpful, thank you all! Do you think ageism would prevent her from getting hired? Or from advancing?
But if she is truly passionate- neve say never. You always need to follow your passion.
