Starting at a new school this year and found out I’ll be paid at a first step. I have three years experience. The contract says the committee will decide salary based on experience. Let it go or push?

Thanks to all of you who took time to leave comments and advice. I contacted HR to look into it and they revised my step up to the 4th step! Even more excited to start this year in a new school. Thanks again.

That is awesome! Congrats!

I would push. It doesn't hurt to try.

Push! As a Dept hiring trying to hire 2 (potentially 3) science teachers right now I would definitely give people their years. And who knows, it may be a clerical error

I got a job offer this summer that I turned down with half of my earned steps. When I turned it down, they offered me my full steps in a heartbeat, then asked if there was any other way to make it work for me. I wasn't ultimately prepared to move, so I still turned it down. Seriously, I would be polite, but tell HR that I would like a day or two to consider since I believed that they were offering me my full experience. As others said, it is unlikely they will decline to hire you and pretty likely they will offer your full steps.

I'd push

like

If it is less than your current step...push it! They should be able to give you step 3. It won’t hurt you to ask. They have already made the decision that they want to hire you.

PLEASE PUSH IT!!!

Truth is most districts can hire you on whatever step they wish. Sad but true. I would work the year then see about renegotiating the following year.

I would clarify with HR

like

Definitely push. What’s the worst that can happen? They say no. Absolutely push!!!!

like

I would push. I started at a new school and was on the wrong step. Long story, but they weren't count some units. It took six months of pushing and not letting it go but it finally got it.

I was told because I didn’t pay into the state teacher retirement fund, I was at step zero. I probably should have pushed a bit harder, but I just didn’t.

Question do you have all your certs?

We have sales people in Canada and the US, the Canadians make 150K CAD and down here it’s 150K USD, the Canadians argue they should be making 30% more than the US colleagues to be equal bc of the exchange! I explain the salary is dependent on the market data for them in Canada, WHERE THEY LIVE, and you can’t compare it to the US employees and the market data down here. Overall they are both in the 75th% for total comp. for their industry. Am I wrong?

Role would be in the Bay Area (currently live in DC). I’ve got 10 YOE, mostly in the government (3 in consulting). Any insight would be helpful!
