Starting IVF soon, interested in knowing if anyone took any time off at all, and at what stages? Going to briefly mention needing medical treatment to a manager as a heads up for appointments or sick days/for flexible working purposes and keen to know what I should roughly be expecting. Thanks all in advance ❤

I ended up taking STD paid time off for IVF. I suffered with a miscarriage earlier in the year and thought working through the pain was the best solution. IVF took a toll on me with all the appts, calls from my dr/nurse, trying to remember to take medication, etc. while trying to work so I felt really worthless at work. I don’t regret taking leave and didn’t realize how beneficial it was for my well being until after my leave started. I highly recommend it!

It’s a tricky to answer - yes, it was easy bc my team supported me and it was approved. Buuutttt D makes you jump through hoops to get it: interviewing with our third party leave team to determine if you qualify, talking to HR about symptoms and ability to work, talking to your resource manager, etc and while the leave was eventually approved it’s only approved for 4 weeks at a time and if you want to extend it the extension has to be submitted by your doctor 11 days before you’re leave ends, so it’s kind of a job within itself to be on top of your leave. While I’m not suggesting leave is for everyone, I am going through my second miscarriage and it was impacting my work performance so I knew I needed to.

I have a very different perspective than D1. I would specifically not want to take leave so that I can stay busy and not think about it! I took stim meds at 9 pm at night after work hours and my monitoring appointments were always at 7 am or on weekends which didn’t interfere with anything. During the day I’d have to check messages on my clinic’s app for new instructions but nothing other than that. The only day I took off was for the retrieval. Also had a miscarriage from a spontaneous pregnancy earlier this year. Honestly if you have my situation you don’t even need to tell your manager because you can get away with just taking a single day off and they won’t think anything of it.

I took off the day of the retrieval and day after, (retrieval was on a Thursday). I also then took off the day of the transfer and day after, (again was on a Thursday). Similar to SM, all of my monitoring appts were first thing in the morning, so I just blocked my calendar and adjusted work hours. During the stims you'll have ~two week block of time where you go in every other day / ever day. Leading up to the transfer I went in 6x during a month period. The monitoring appts take about 5 minutes if just labs, 20 if an ultrasound. It's been very fortunate that all of this occurred while working from home, otherwise I couldn't have been as flexible.

I am on my second cycle. First cycle I took off egg retrieval day, transfer day was a holiday so I took the day after off, and then the beta day I worked until I got my not pregnant call and took the rest of the day off. I'm very thankful to have a boss who is supportive and flexible. This cycle I took retrieval day off, I plan to transfer next year and will take transfer day and the day after off as well. Still up in the air about beta day.

I took egg retrieval day off and the following Monday was a holiday I was ready to work by Tuesday, however, if I had to actually go in an office I would’ve taken more time because it took me about a week to physically recover. Also I had a lot of follicles, so the week of retrieval was rough on my body, my ovaries felt very heavy, difficult to walk, and glad I was working from home. For transfer day they gave me Valium, so I took that day off because I was slightly high after the procedure. All my ultrasounds during the growing follicle phase were first thing in the morning so I didn’t take time off, but if you have regularly scheduled meetings you may miss I would give them a heads up, I never told anyone.

Kind of aggravated with the example male leadership is setting right now with regard to parenting at CV. At least 5 men in leadership have had new babies in the last month and it seems like some have taken no time off or only the bare minimum. We have 12 weeks and should be encouraged to use it! If leadership isn’t taking advantage of their own policy, what does that say to the rest of the staff? In my perspective, this is likely further contributing to the gender disparity in CV leadership

So just interviewed for a Revenue Agent position supposed to receive initial offer within the next couple of weeks based on what the manager was saying. Part of me definitely likes the idea of a 40hr work week with no other crazy obligations/metrics or needing to do extracurricular stuff to get a bump in pay. The manager guy said generally they put you at a low step so pay obviously isn’t spectacular. Now entering my 3rd year as a SM is it worth taking a pay hit or would you try industry?

However, I’m worried about cost - we really would not be able to afford a nanny in our city on our salaries. Advice welcome!
