Liking because I feel similarly (third year)
I feel this way too (3rd year M&A associate). I started to reach out to more partners and associates in other offices to get more exposure to deals and not compete so much with my peers/associates in my own office, but I know that’s harder if you are in your firms largest office..
Being a generalist is tough in general, both because it's just harder to gain expertise in a wide range of fields and because it's harder to market your skills when you don't have a niche. Is there an area that you really enjoy or feel most comfortable with? I'd recommend becoming an expert in that area. Especially at a mid-sized firm (as opposed to a small shop in a small town, for example), advancing as a generalist is hard. Find a specialty, even something as broad as "real estate" or "family law" and start focusing.
