Have fun! Double check that you packed everything. Ping your manager/team for directions and dress code or tips. Also if it’s a long term project see if your hotel will hold a toiletries bag.Ask a lot of questions. Take notes. And try to engage your team. However, please for the love of God. Don’t March up to the Sr Client and tell them how excited you are to “Add Value” and be on your “first project”. We had a BA do that once and my SM almost died on the spot lol.

Only bring a carry on, ideally you have a professional looking suitcase (plain black is fine) and backpack/computer bag (not a backpack that is colorful) — it sounds silly but it’s a giveaway that you’re the junior person on the team and you want to level up around senior clients. If you’re a woman, bring a few options you can mix and match for outfits. You may get there and wish you had a blazer to wear twice or find you’re way over dressed and be thankful for flats instead of heels. If you’re a guy bring a jacket or two just in case. It’s fair game to ask your manager about dress code. Regardless of gender you may feel like people are paying attention to your outfits and they are (likely) not. Don’t overthink it! I SWEAR by packing bags that compress the air out. Helps double capacity in my luggage. Good luck! My first week at my prior firm I left my luggage in a taxi on day 1 and it drove away without either of us noticing. I had to go to a mall in the middle of nowhere to get enough clothes for the week!

Book/kindle/tablet because it can get kind of boring in the evenings. Hopefully your team goes out to dinner once in a while, but best to be prepared!

BELT AND SOCKS!!! Can't tell you how many random belts from Walmart/Ross I have because I keep forgetting them.

I should be set on carryon and backpack, both are black! Thanks guys! This is helping calm my nerves haha

If you’re traveling every week, it might be helpful to have two pairs of any essentials such as your toothbrush. One at home and one to travel with. It’s really helpful and I have been doing that since I always forgot little things sometime haha Good luck on your first week!

Has anyone got a good examples of a PM resume? My background is in consulting and my resume was project based. Now that I’m a PM, I’m unsure how to structure it. At moment I’ve listed my current job with 4/5 bullets, then my previous consulting job with 4 projects listed beneath with 4 bullets per project. Any thoughts or advice?

I work for a technology consulting firm, have a little over 5 years experience in the financial services industry, largely performing Business Analyst roles. I want to work remotely for the rest of my life, ideally never stepping into a client’s office again. Anyone have advice on how to achieve this? Should I be switching to another industry (financial services seems to have a barrier to entry, which means less competition, and is why I’ve remained there)? Is contracting a better option?

Been practicing a year now. Of 6 attorneys, 4 will be retiring soon, and I was brought in to hopefully take over. I am troubled: first that my partners largely provide me with no guidance. They handed me a client with a large quantity of fairly straightforward casework and have been hands off since. There also hasn’t been any talk of a raise/performance review. How should I ask for guidance/mentor ship? How do I ask for a raise, or should I presume one is coming?

Got an offer to start 8/31. If I put in my 30 days now, what’s the likelihood that I don’t get my PBB next week? For context I’m an SM leading an ongoing integration w/ lean team and supporting a second project as an SMR. Pros: - don’t need to wait until 8/30 to leave - team figures out how to backfill - I can start transitioning internal initiatives before our annual plans are due Cons: - no PBB (I’m expecting 30%). - A week less of pay I’d otherwise take off

Is it possible to do well in this career while you also don't care about the client's problems? I've only ever been told I'm great at the job, I get good ratings, build good relationships with clients and internal people alike. But I'm doing this because the pay is decent and I can do it well. Deep down I don't care even a little about the problems my clients have, and hearing some of their questions/feedback often makes me lose respect for them. Should I do this just because I'm good at it?

Anyone else start making PPT presentations thinking. “This is entirely unnecessary fluff and will never be looked at at again. Looking to switch careers but feel like I have no direction. I hate banking - I literally couldn’t care less about my deals and my teammates are pricks. Don’t think I want to do PE deal team. NEED work life balance, want something client facing / senior exposure. What can I do to figure out what kind of jobs I’ll like? Thinking about IR / fundraising but don’t want to be a glorified admin. Not sure about corp strat either. Miserable at my current job. bad to quit w/o something lined up?

I’ve been seeing some project management roles in industry that I’d like to apply for, but most of my current projects have been risk and controls based. Would it be a stretch/dishonest to tailor my resume to fit those roles? I think I’d be a good fit and have the core skills for the work. I’d like to become a technical project manager eventually.

Considering leaving for another firm job, one year in. Thoughts? New position would be a better practice area fit and would only work with clients in the industry I want. Currently it’s about 60% of what I’d like. Also, current firm seems to be stagnating with low hours to go around. I’m worried about not making hours, missing my bonus, and low professional development. Comparable on prestige & exit options and would be $5k less. Just worried about burning bridges and leaving “too soon.”
