Not worth your time - focus on networking first. You will have time to prepare, and if you prepare too much, you’ll end up being robotic, and that will actually be detrimental to you.

Network and get to your peers on a personal level.

Case In Point

Don’t prep - you could easily develop bad habits that’ll set you back. Assuming you’re going to a target program, your consulting club will teach you. They’ve done it for 100s before you. As for reaching out to employees in target offices- I wouldn’t. You’ll have a lot of the baseline questions answered once employers come to school/ you have coffee chats with second years. Then after that you reach out for questions Use this time to just get yourself mentally ready. Maybe also come up with and write down the base stories you’ll use for behavioral interview questions. You’d be surprised how quickly you forget details from your job once you start your MBA

+1 I read case in point and did some networking pre-mba, but looking back, it was a waste of time and anxiety.

Agree and disagree with BCG. Definitely network big now. Call and email everybody unabashedly. They all like that you’re planning this far ahead. But KEEP connecting with new people because the turnover is crazy. Only way to get good at casing is practice. And you wont have the time while leading clubs and getting good grades. There are sites online, and you can contact consulting clubs both MBA and undergrad to find people to practice with. Getting your first 10-20 out of the way will work wonders for your nerves and imposter syndrome that first semester.

Most top schools nowadays don’t have grade disclosure. My advice would vary depending on the school you attend, if top 10 the recruiting/networking will come to you … so go all in on interview prep. Otherwise focus on grades and networking first, then case prep hard.

like

Understand the impulse to do something but wait. Assuming you’re going to a target school you’ll have tons of time to network / case. Once you get on campus the consulting club can answer your general questions about timeline(s) for casing & networking and explain how the recruiting process works for your school. Reaching out before you understand the process, have practiced these convos with second years and have good questions to ask is a really easy way to stand out for the wrong reasons.

The fact that they didn’t even bother to offer a little bit higher than Firm B bothers me a bit, since it doesn’t make me feel like they really want me. Do you think Firm A is low balling me?
