Starting on Monday. Transactional. Super nervous and anxious.

I’m considering doing two things: 1) keep an excel spreadsheet that has assignment due dates, client names, assigning partner, etc. and 2) keeping a hand written diary of mistakes that I make on various types of legal agreements, with the intention that I will check that diary for assignments to make sure I don’t repeat mistakes.

Thoughts on this? Any tips, advice? Thanks!

Sounds like a lot of work

Agreed. This stuff will become more natural over time I wouldn’t add more to your plate as is.

You’ll be fine; no one you’ll work with is an all-knowing genius; you’ll make mistakes and your discomfort will make you remember them. Just be sure to proofread your work and keep a master to-do list for every day (I find it easiest to use pen and paper for this). Reply to your emails as quickly as you can even if it’s just “will do”, it gives people psychological comfort. Forget about most conventional productivity tips and focus on client service: if you are working on a big task and small urgent ones come up, stop the big task and deal with the small then get back to the big one. Also did i mention PROOFREADING lol. It’s really important as a junior.

Honestly - best advice / prep for transactional is to spend some time getting to know how to schedule invites on outlook

Cosign A6, and I know this bc I was a sr corp paralegal before law school.

Great plan, but it will fail in execution. Just keep handwritten to-do lists with deadlines.

I’d keep your notes re mistakes in a Word document rather than a handwritten diary so you can do a keyword search as needed.

I have this in one note, one big omnibus note but have split out comments we get from the clients we work for a lot so I can tailor docs for them. It’s actually quite useful and makes the repeat clients very happy to see they don’t have to make the same points over and over again.

Don’t be overly nervous or anxious. Firms have no associates. You’re already ahead of the game by existing.

I went client side and am miserable - it’s madness on this side. Have made it 90 days and would prefer not to make it more than 120 - but we’re in a pandemic. Half of the problem is that I “onboarded” remote and the onboarding was TERRIBLE. The other thing is that there is no process and I’m on a team full of managers who have spent 15 years at this company and have no availability to talk to me with a day full of meetings. I’d prefer not to quit without a backup but I cry every day.

What's the most effective way for a small RIA to recruit FAs who have a few years experience, want to break away from large/corporate firms? I'm a $70M fee-only (commissions for insurance) independent RIA with a generous comp schedule that enables FAs to own their own book while they grow. As the owner, my focus is to help FAs succeed; as a firm, our focus is on client service and helping them succeed. I can afford a small salary, but not benefits. I'm especially interested in female FAs.

Advice needed! I started at an ID firm only a few months ago after a long stint doing in-house litigation. I was referred to the firm by a very good friend who also still works there. Question for the Biglaw Bowl: How common is it to take a pay cut when being promoted from associate to income partner? I had heard about this happening at some lower ranked V100 firms. Does anyone here have any insight into this? How common is it, how much of a pay cut, and how long until your pay catches up to associate pay?

Mid-level here. Has anyone gotten their firm to approve their doing work at a deep discount and, if so, what strategies did you use? A potential client approached me directly about a small matter (~20 to 30 hr amicus brief). The potential client (gov’t) pays a standard rate ~40% lower than mine, but I want to take on the project because it would be a good professional opportunity (e.g., high profile case & client) and of course the lower rate won’t affect my comp directly. 🤷‍♀️ All advice welcome!
