I know you know this, but it’s a deeply personal question. Everyone has a different threshold for what is acceptable and not. For me, it comes down to whether or not respect is still on the table.
You’re not going to agree on everything and that’s fine, the disagreement, when handled appropriately, should lead to better outcomes. But the key is whether that disagreement is actually handled with respect and integrity. If you spend months being railroaded or that person is not acting in line with your values, it‘a fair to reflect on whether your role at the company still matches what you’re looking for. The key for me is whether the disagreement leads to improved output for customers/users.
For context, I’m not specifically “COO” in title…I’m cofounder and head of product, but running all business pieces of the pie, while my cofounder runs all technical aspects. We definitely have different perspectives on certain things but we don’t shy away from conflict, we just respect each other and I’ve found we consistently end up at a better place than either of us would have individually by having the disagreement. It’s productive.
