Some very good advice I got at 21 (multiple times, from mentors with MBAs): an MBA is a tactical degree. It can be valuable, but frankly, for most people, it isn't worth the time/effort/opportunity except as a bridge to a path you couldn't otherwise access (typically a role/industry where the MBA is a gatekeeper, or a career switch you have no other feasible path to). This isn't to say you can't or shouldn't get an MBA, or that long-term planning is a bad idea. But so early in your career, with so much potential for growth and experimentation, it feels blinkered to be optimizing for a distant MBA. It's very hard to imagine what paths you'd want to follow that a) require that MBA and b) can't be attained more directly in the meantime. For the ECs themselves, that's up to the adcoms. My usual advice is that genuine interest goes a long way there; I don't know whether a sustained audience will or won't move the needle, but most successful influencers build their followings on a deep passion or focus, and social media might be a great way to demonstrate that, if you frame it right.

Damn, so people are plotting their MBAs five years in advance now 😅

C2, I’m genuinely sorry you got dinged but am hoping you hear good news for R2!! I didn’t mean for this post to come off as obnoxious and i’m sorry if you took it that way. Congratulations on your achievements with the students that you mentored. For my EC’s, i’ve spent a few hours a week tutoring students from lower income backgrounds for free since I turned 15. I don’t have quantifiable metrics for this, but I know that I was able to push these students in the right direction, because they did not have any guidance from their parents. I have also been volunteering at a nonprofit that supports the elderly Asian community with their transition to life in the United States since July 2019. I just graduated college in December but am trying to give back to my community as much as I can, because I am not able to do much financially just yet. I intend on expanding my involvement, not for MBA purposes but because I hope to make a large impact on someone’s life directly. I’m not trying to be shallow, rather, i’m trying to be a competitive applicant because only a handful of people applying have my background in social media. I just got lucky and am hoping to spin it in the right direction because I am aware that it is more competitive for Asians to get into top Bschools.

It’s definitely different. One thing i learned through this whole process is the different parts of your application should speak to each other. You have the non profit work, if you could spin your insta and tik tok aspect to support non profits over the next 5 years and show you did something impactful then I think that would be a compelling story. Much more than the pieces being separate disparate parts of your app

Depends on what you’re famous for

H/S are crapshoots for basically everyone who isn’t coming from a PE mega fund or a top performer at MBB. I don’t think any adcom would be that judgmental. As long as it makes sense with your story (e.g., you’ve learned through your experience that you’re really interested in how people interact with brands, and that made you interested in brand management), I don’t see how it could be anything but a positive

You seem a little young for mba. Aren’t you basically fresh out of undergrad?

Yes, i just graduated and changed my initial post to reflect that. I’m hoping to get my MBA in 5 years. Honestly, i’m not 100% sure if I want to change careers because I havent started yet, but want to be prepared for it.

Be aware that your GMAT scores expire 5 years after you take them

Fish - need help here. I used to work in the research team at McK / Bain (let’s assume one) pre-MBA. My experience here at BCG has not been great and I am looking to move to another consulting firm. The challenge is that the practice area I work in is actually stronger at the other MBB ( not the one I worked pre-MBA). How ridiculous would it be to even apply there? And if accepted, how would it be perceived - having worked at all three. 🤦🏻‍♂️😞 Or should I just continue at BCG or go back to old firm

I’ve been working in the HR space and am interested in pursuing an MBA to transition into Human Capital consulting/ Change management/ Talent technology and analytics.
