Stay in consulting for another 2 years to make Partner or entertain discussions from growing software company that is likely to go public in next 2 years. Comp is higher at software company for next 2-3 yrs probably, then equal for a bit, then Partner would be more. What additional info would you want to be able to do a true comparison?

I guess my view is, if the odds are so stacked in your favor, why 2 years from now? Independent of above, you have to probably do a 5 year view of expected comp to see like for like comparison. I’d also make sure that you discount some of the value on the companies end because you may not be as successful as you are at your current role, and you need to adjust for that. Outside of that, comes down to what you want to do. Sticking around at any company for promises (of partner or IPO) is always a risk, so make sure you grab as many tangibles and the rest is gravy.

Also very real, been following, last company from founder went public, lots of high hitters who have invested, clear goal for IPO from software company leadership

Usually once you make partner you have golden handcuffs for your first several years, so you don’t see many of them leaving as soon as they hit that milestone

If the company is growing fast + equity package is good + you have interest/ability to move up in the co, the software co. would be way more pay. Partner is a stable amount but has a very real cap at most places.

What would you do if the software company doesn’t go public / the role doesn’t work out? Would you try to go back into Consulting or go to another Startup? If you’re going to go back to Consulting, just stay in consulting, IMO.

If the comp was similar, I'd be open to go back to consulting or industry.

Honestly you’ll be fine. Compensation doesn’t really matter at this level. The question is just what do you want to do? Which role / team excites you?

Yeah I’m not going to work 60+ hours in my 4th decade of work unless half that time is spent on the golf course. I’ll find something else.

The recent most billable hours post, inspired me. What is your longest billable day? Mine was 56 hours straight with no break—and the partner was more than a jerk when I was saying no more at the 30 hour point. That was two 24 hour billable days back to back on my time sheet and on the bill, a 360 hour month, and 650 aggregated for two months. And it is one reason (of so many reasons) why this job can suck so much! At least I got a good bonus...

I joined Deloitte in 19’ and don’t buy into the circlejerk that seems to go on both for / against the company - I like being a part of the firm but am underwhelmed with where the recent compensation cycle resulted. I have an opportunity with a small business to get a roughly $45k salary increase, but would have 2 sacrifice the security of Deloitte, wfh and paternity leave, which will come into play this fall as we have a baby due in November. Anyone make a similar switch before or havethoughts?

FYI GSAP offers starting to go out - $165K base, $10K signing bonus, extra $20K signing if done by sept 10th, $5K relocation bonus (this likely varies by person and office). Final signing deadline is Oct 22nd
