Stay on a project leaning absolutely nothing but get promoted because it’s a high profile client or ask to roll off the client and actually learn something but give up your chances on a promotion? Which is better?

Get the promotion in the bag, identify someone else to take over your role so you don't leave your team in a mess and then move on to shiny new project!

Without a doubt, stay on high profile. You may not be learning something now, but no doubt, they need you on it for a reason.

This happened to me recently. I was on a high profile client, barely given much work. Had a couple weeks were it did get crazy but besides that it was pretty slow and chill. My work was good quality but I defiantly didn’t put in as much effort as other people at my level. I ended up getting promoted, as well as other people on my client. Moral of the story is, perception is equally if not more important than reality. If you want to progress faster than your peers or faster than you would normally, stay on the high profile client.

Some people will hate on it, but you have to do what best for you.

Touchy feely client asked me today, “how come you never talk about your family? Don’t you get along with them? Family is so important to me.” I’ve been feeling particularly alone and lonely during Covid, but even before... I kind of keep people at arms length especially clients I’ve never even met in person. 😔 How do you even respond?

My manager doesn’t seem to have any boundaries - always saying yes to additional unnecessary work from the client and always working through weekends/nights/PTO/holidays. They are supportive of encouraging everyone else to have a WLB but since they don’t lead by example it ends up making me feel like I’m doing something wrong or crossing a line whenever I set a boundary with them or push back on a request that doesn’t align with our goals or priorities
