Don’t say “Go”
🙄
Try to remember all the things creative directors have done to you that you hated, and then don't do those things.
Delegate until it feels like you have nothing to do, then look around and see what else needs to be done.
Keep in mind that its a promotion but you're still not in charge. Depending on the size of your company you might be middle management.
Related point - the ability to collaborate across departments is now much more important.
If you get in a bind, just do what's best for the work. That's how you'll be judged and youll always be able to defend your decision.
And congratulations! Its a fun job - enjoy it.
This is amazing. Thank you.
I know of CDs who became arrogant and a complete different person when they got promoted from being a senior creative. Not sure if this is the advice you need but staying humble and nice and not acting like you’re almighty might be a good start!
Congrats! Number one rule is listening. Your team is counting on you. Be a listener first. Then act.
Be a leader people want to follow not by title but by choice.
Don’t let it get to your head. Be a team player but have a point of view.
Lead with conviction but know when to compromise.
Always make it about the work. And go kick some ass.
+1
Lead with conviction. Love it.
Also - read a lot. Business, Design, Management, you name it.
Learn to write if you’re on the visual side. It’ll help.
Stay out of political BS. Put the work first.
I read that as covid CD role. I need a vacation. Congrats by the way
Rising Star
In these unprecedented times, we need that role now more than ever.
Research and read a good people management book. Lots of CDs who are truly talented and creative, who can not manage and motivate people at all.
Congrats!!!!!
Thanks!
Search on Amazon to see if you can get a copy of this out of print book. Alastair Crompton has a chapter devoted to what it takes to be CD and it is absolutely wonderful.
Found a used one. Thanks!
Congrats!! Curious to hear as well.
Thanks!
This advice is all nice. But bullshit. Fact is you have no idea what to expect because no one is under the same circumstances and too many people are reading Simon Sineck linkedin posts. This next step will only reveal what you’re made of at this point and how much you have to learn. Good luck and don’t be too hard in on yourself or anyone around you. Oops, there I go too.
