Stories of expense audits resulting in high performers being let go?

I have seen several instances of counseling. I have personally seen only one instance of someone being terminated. It was a partner who lacked ethics and judgment and charged through items that were personal and clearly not client/firm related. Very sad to lose a top performing partner (earning close to $1 mil) because he felt the need to charge an extra $50k or so. Lost his career and much more than that $50k he tried to sneak through. It's just plain theft. Never worth it to exaggerate or embellish. Just be honest about expenses. Heard a story from 30 years ago about a manager on a large budget account charging through his boat payments. Don't know if true or legend, but pretty balsy and messed up.

Hate to rain on your parade EY1, but firms have little to no tolerance for those who lack integrity and ethics. Those are the backbone of any firm and our profession. Rainmaker, leader and other, no sacred cows in real firms of substance. My story above refers to rainmaking partner in leadership at a B4.

Should performers be exempt from the expense policy ?

Not going to happen. High performers make it rain, expense reports are little puddles.

It was a topic of discussion at lunch today with the audit team and the client and was surprised at how many people felt there are gray areas when it comes to certain policies. Wanted to see what actual stories were.

Know 4 a fact about a former SM WHO was let go 4 running thru personal expenses and "made up" a "business trip" to the UK.

OP what kind of gray areas were mentioned? Nothing above seems to be gray only black and white

I'll be renovating my house (gut all existing bathrooms and kitchen, extend house to make room for an extra bathroom). It's currently my primary residence but I likely have to move in early 2022 to another city where I also own a house and then I plan to rent my current residence via Airbnb. What should I consider from a tax perspective? For example, if my current residence becomes an investment property before or when I renovate, does the renovation count as a tax deductible expense?

Has anyone moved from a H/MCOL city to a small town or rural area? Any regrets in regards to career progression, networking, or lack thereof? I'm thinking of making the move this winter in order to cut my housing expense by more than half and to put my daughter in better Catholic school. My employer doesn't care where we live so long as we can get to an airport. I grew up in a small town, so it wouldn't be a shock to me, just worried about how it may affect my career trajectory.

Working as an audit staff in big 4 shared service centre. It's been 2 years. I really don't like what I do there, also it seems I won't like what I'll be doing there even after becoming senior. Thinking of leaving and joining industry once ACCA qualified. (One more paper left). But people around me discourage that growth potential and earnings in industry are way less compared to public accounting. I know that too but I still want to leave. I'd like to stick to core accounting. Thoughts pls

I’m 30 years old and have been running my own (small) agency over the past two years, working with local businesses. I’ve got a solid book of client and spec work, with creative ad copy. I’ve also written for Sports Illustrated, so I can write anything from articles to ad copy. Before that, I worked in communications at a few law firms. Now I’m looking to work at an ad agency as a copywriter. Honest question: is it a reach to pursue that? And, if it isn’t a reach, do I apply for entry-level?
