Strategists on pharma/health & wellness accounts: Any downsides? Do you feel restricted or stifled? Upsides?

I moved onto a health/pharma account early last year from traditional consumer and tbh, I like it. I find myself having a better work/life balance, better pay, and the work can be interesting. Healthcare is usually pretty stable too. It’s not for everyone and people will knock it but I personally don’t look to my work as a passion so the topic of material isn’t all that important to me. If I can close my computer at 5pm most days and afford myself some luxuries and time to do what I love, that’s all that matters and working on a healthcare account allows for me to do just that.

It certainly isn’t as “fun” in the traditional sense like it is on consumer - and much more red tap - but I agree with everything SS1 said. I personally thrive in more stringent/research-heavy environments and so you definitely get that on the pharma side. I’ve been in it a few months and honestly don’t feel the stifling that I was told I would… One downside I’ve experienced personally though is an expectation (either spoken directly or something you just sense) that strategists from consumer side aren’t as rigorous or serious. Which really isn’t necessarily true. So sometimes it feels like you have to prove yourself as a “junior” all over again (which is annoying). But honestly for the stability, worth it.

Health question: Does anyone else suffer from nerve pain in their butt/hips from sitting all day? My research tells me it’s piriformis pain. It means my sit bones are irritating my butt muscle, which irritates my sciatic nerve. It can be excruciating and hurt even when I stand. I bought a fancy seat cushion for my office chair, and I have a standing desk. Nothing helps. The pain has been around for about a month. Anyone else?? What did you do?

Thoughts on Indexed Universal Life Insurance as an investment vehicle? I hear the pros and cons from the sellers of this, whom I understand gain heavy commissions. But wanted to get thoughts from investors and if this isn't a good vehicle, what alternative investment vehicles do you suggest (outside of stocks, Roth, 401k, and real estate)? Looking to diversify my portfolio. I'm 43, married, income 600k combined, and we have 2 properties worth 3m and investment accounts worth ~2-3m. Thanks!

My firm has a reduced hours policy, and I know people who have negotiated reduced hours after having kids. I do not have kids yet (we recently started trying), but I’m seriously considering asking for a reduced hours arrangement (partly for future kids, but partly for sustainability of the career, mental health, physical health, etc.). The written policy doesn’t require it, but do I have to give a “reason” when asking for reduced hours? Anyone have experience with this?

Maybe a strange take but I think that we should be more in touch with our internal bodies. We can send astronauts to the moon and rovers to mars but there’s no easy, portable way to scan our bodies to see what’s going on inside (e.g., a DIY full body xray or MRI). I think this could be the next gen of weighing scales that also show various health metrics, track fitness, etc. It could help with prevention and diagnosis. I guess it’s bad for health providers who make $ today from this. Thoughts?

Not comp related but a question on references: I’ve only had 2 direct managers, current one is nice but I can’t let him know I’m interviewing. Previous one was a bully and I made clear that I cut contact with him when I left (he later had to contact me for non-essential work related stuff but I declined to talk). I have other references I could use, but want to prep for situation when employers ask “why can’t we talk to your previous manager.” Thanks!
