Strategy& Ops - Pharma / Life Sciences vs. ZS Associates - Strategy Insights & Planning Consultant Coming in out of an MBA program. ZS is out of the Philly office and pays a little bit less but friends and family are there. Also connected with interviewers better here. Strategy& is out of Houston office, which is where I’d rather be and homes are cheaper. However, interviewers didn’t connect as well but I’m not sure how representative that is. Strategy&, IMO. Exit opportunities are significantly better, comp is better out of the gate and grows faster, and broader support network within the form makes more room for opportunity. Every firm is slammed right now, and people are interviewing constantly. I wouldn’t worry too much if your interviewers were a bit worn down.

This!

Strategy& at the post-MBA level. ZS is a great place to work, but is hard for post-MBA hires vs homegrown due to the increased responsibly (I.e leading multiple projects) of the role compared to other consulting firms.

s& pays way higher over time

The truth is you could be happy at either place. ZS comp does not lag Strategy& over time (and I'm including at the P level). ZS is busy because we are growthing 30% for the second year in a row (now, from a pretty sizable base). I've worked at firms not growing, and I'll take the very strong demand for our products and services anytime over the alternative. You can pretty much choose what you work on because of the number of projects being sold. Yes, you may have too much work at times, but I think that is true of consulting most anywhere. I think ZS is a great company because of the people, culture, and our success, but we don't yet have an office in Houston. Best of luck in whatever you decide.

I'm not sure if you still work at ZS, but this is not true.

Agree S& is better in the abstract but our life sciences/pharma practice isn't that strong (and basically non existent in Houston which is almost all Utilities/Oil&Gas) so would take that into consideration

This isn’t the time to join ZS. It’s going through severe growing pains that are causing a lot of turbulence internally.

Unless the people u interviewed with are on your direct team I wouldn’t be too worried. I’d choose Philly at my age Bc of family, but if you’re younger venturing out is nice to do

If you'd really rather be in Houston, seems like a no-brainer to me. Pay, exposure to senior clients, and exits are pretty good at S&. I exited this year and had no issue getting offers over candidates from MBB. With a few exceptions, S& ticks the box to get the interview, and from there nobody cares much about which firm you came from (most offers were from teams led by ex-MBB). I obviously can't speak for ZS, but S& was a major boost to my career post-MBA.

I personally would be worried about “not connecting” with interviewers. I would consider interviewers as a good representation of average company profile and culture. Remember you will spend 80% of your life with the people in the firm. Having said that it is important to reflect on what motivates you to come to work everyday, what motivates you to go above and beyond. It could be more prestige, money, people, area of focus etc.

ZS post mba compensation grows 10% during the first performance round so don’t worry about comp. ZS pays exceptionally well.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I decided to go with S&.
