Stressing that I can’t have a kid until SO pays off college debt. However, nothing major in my career is happening for next 12 mo, aka perfect time to have child #1. Fears about his debt unfounded?

Yes, go ahead and have the kid

Depends on the size of the debt. There’s never a perfect time to have a kid, but career development is a huge obstacle. Since you’re able to overcome that now, I would say go for it!

Don’t assume that you’re going to get pregnant right away...

Don’t put off life milestones for things that you can fix. It’ll be a little more difficult to payoff that student loan, but worth it if you’re stressing out.

A child lasts a lot longer than debt, prioritize the child

I’ve been at BCG 6 years and still have 80k left. Debt is just a number. Live your life.

Who would take care of the child if you go back to work? Do you know the cost of childcare? Can you absorb the cost on top of the college debt and other expenses?

like

Also, you know that actually having the child is only the first step right? The whole thing lasts a lot longer than 12 months.

How much is the debt, when are you on track to pay it off, how old are you?

We have three kids and my husband is still paying off law school loans but I’ve always been a strong saver so we are very comfortably financially.

39k is nothing. My fiancé has 250k

That's not much debt. It took us 2 years to have our first, so you might as well start trying

1. Don’t expect your wife to become pregnant in one shot. Might take a few months sometimes. Include that extra 3 months buffer in your planning. 2. You should also keep in mind your and your SO’s thinking will change once you become parents. It will NOT be easy to join office back after 6 months. You will in fact start discussing whether your wife should extend sabbatical by 1-2 years etc. due to multiple perfectly rational reasons. 3. If your wife decides to rejoin the office after sometime, there will be emotional as well as financial stress. Daycare could be costly. Plus emotional strain of not giving time to your kid can be overwhelming. All the best for your decision!

Lol 39k is nothing. Have the child. If you can’t manage to overcome this “hurdle”, I’m not sure you should have gotten married in the first place

like

I’m early 30s. SO is mid to late 30s, 39k. I have 18k savings but don’t know if I can give that without guilt attached. Feel like it’s more genuine to put it towards a college $$ egg.

D1 agreed. Career window is pretty generous for all scenarios 12-24 months

A2, how the hell did your fiancé accumulate 250k in debt??? Did he buy a lot of ShakeWeights or do late night shopping?? :)

Moms, I am 14 weeks pregnant. At KPMG, the new year starts in October and basically by spring of the following year, so April 2021, is when they put people up for promotion for the following year. My goal is to make it on that promo list in April 2021 - But thats when I am due. When should I inform my team that I am pregnant and how do I let them know that I am still willing to work hard for this promo despite my pregnancy? Thank you!

Anyone dealt with your sibling getting divorced and the SIL fallout? My brother is going though a divorce and it is ugly. She is saying he is “unfit” (he is not). He has a 32 yr old who I am very close to, and a 12 yr old who is my goddaughter. His ex was my bff and now she says he is an unfit father and trying to take away his parental rights. I am stunned. It has fractured us beyond what I thought possible. Do I stay neutral for the nieces? Do I shout at the top of my lungs he is a good guy?

When leading a team through a reasonably large process change (e.g. changing from non existent to… something), is it a better idea to adopt a Big Bang approach (huge change, but all at once) or through smaller iterative changes (over many months)? What are the pros / cons of either approach? And any suggestions for dimensions to keep in mind when deciding?

About to switch firms from federal / no travel to commercial / travel with two young kids (under 5). Looking for quick list of recommendations and survival tips to make this transition as a father.

Anyone ever had trouble with a doctor not wanting to certify a family member’s condition, in order to take a leave of absence? My brother attempted suicide via drug OD (he was addicted) and he’s been hospitalized for over a week with seizures, psychosis, peeing blood, etc. We have visited him every day, driving 100+ miles round trip. The doctor is giving my father and me grief, saying (quote) “you aren’t providing care, the hospital is” and “there’s no reason you can’t go back to work.”

Hope to learn more if you bought an apt in Manhattan, or if you decided against it (renting/moving to upstate/Long Island/Jersey). My husband and I are considering to have a baby soon and are thinking of buying and living in Manhattan for the next 10 years or so (looking at property under $2M). Please share what you considered as you were making the decision - I hate throwing away rent but also don’t want to trap ourselves in significant financial obligations. Thanks!

Can any at will employer adjust your salary unilaterally like we’ve seen done at several firms this year? I work 8+ hour shifts in the office as we are an essential business where masks are required at all times. Has anyone else had the experience of wearing a good mask at work and getting excruciating headaches at work that last for a few hours after work? I've already had an isolation period so it's not Covid, but I'm thinking it might be the higher levels of carbon monoxide, as I've tried wearing a different mask and did not have the same problem.

Will it exceed the limit and if so, what should I do? 22 here, not too familiar with the process. Thanks!

Would you suggest paying down student loans (approx $29k) while 0% interest or put that money into savings. I’ve been on a 10% salary reduction since April and bought a house last fall. I’ve been able to pay my bills and maintain about 2-3 months of expenses in savings. My disposable income has reduced due to the salary reduction, but I’ve cut out unnecessary spending. I’m trying to decide whether to take advantage of 0% interest and get my loans as low as I can or put that money into savings.
