Strong opinions on tattoos?

I am from a family where both parents are "old money" PHD holders, one of whom is a professor and one of whom is an executive of a moderately sized company. I have a full sleeve, that I would never not cover in a business context. I don't find this to be an indication of "class", and the only issue it has ever caused me has been that I have to wear a suit jacket on a daily basis, which I would do anyway because I think it is more professional. Also, I work in Atlanta, so it gets hot in the summer, and still wore the jacket before I had the sleeve, so no inconvenience to me. Hands/neck is ridiculous to have in a professional context, but anything else is fair game as long as you can cover it to prevent the unnecessary pre-judgement of many of my clients, who tend to be people from an older generation (public sector). (And I guess the judgement of the moral police in this thread)

like

People act on stereotypes. We wear nice collared shirts because of that, and we wear decent dress slacks because of it. Tattoos don't help your first impression within the business world - but it's not the only factor either. No one is claiming that tattoos prevent you from success here, but, regardless of whether you think it's fair or not, within the business world, in some segments, it may lead to pre-judgments (as this thread evidences). Plenty of other factors can outweigh tattoos - they're not the only thing, they're not an automatic veto... but they're more likely to hurt your career than help it.

I hate them. If you're gonna get them keep them under short sleeve shirt/shorts

I am Jewish, and it is against our religion, or it is at least contrary to custom. I know very few Jewish people with tattoos, though no doubt there is a subset. Also, at least for me, it has very negative connotations due to the association with concentration camp victims being forced to have numbers tattood on their arms. I don't feel at all judgemental about others choosing to get tattoos, and I have seen some very cool ones. I do not really associate tattoos with white collar professionals, however. YMMV

like

I said class and I still hold to that.

Source: I grew up in a very affluent area and went to a state school. My home friends (most come from money) have almost none, while my school friends (same state, from middle class families) have tons.

Caveat: you can do that if you're poor and stupid too 😂. Not making a point anymore

I always wanted to get "Your Name" tattooed on my ass

Also just to add - tattoos are a very strong indicator of class and IMO are bad for optics. They have to be very well executed to look good.

like

I love them on men, but not so much on women. I'm a female, and I love guys with them. As long as they're not neck up, or on hands. If females have them, I don't care, or judge, just not for my body.

like

"""Class""" 🙄

like

Female (why does that matter) and have one, want more. So weird how people think so strongly about other people's choices. I won't get one in a visible place until I leave the corporate world because of the above judgement that is clearly rampant in this culture.

Who cares what people think?

Thinking of getting a ring tattoo with my fiancé but it would be covered by the wedding bands

like

Thinking of getting L-O-V-E and H-A-T-E tattooed on my knuckles, like Joliet Jake in the Blues Brothers movie

like

If you're going to try and tell me that visible tattoos are not an indicator of class you're a liar

like

Because nobody really cares. A few people might balk at them, but that's rare. The military even relaxed their rules on them. If they're not offensive (racist, obscenity, nudes etc), no one actually cares. If you have face tats, that could cause an issue. Otherwise, nobody gives a shit.

like

I have strong opinions of people who think others care about their tattoos. It's like piercings were in the 90's, when it was such a big deal, then when people's parents and grandparents were getting their eyebrows and tongues pierced, it lost its appeal, and any shock value ceased. My Mother has tattoos, and she's a Pediatrician. They're out of sight though. So whoever said class has something to do with it, is wrong. Unless you have a tramp stamp, or prison tattoos, it's not an issue.

like

Side question. If you to white collar prison do you still need tattoos to associate yourself w your chosen gang? Asking for a friend.
