Dallas is awesome if you’re from there or have a way of making friends. I grew up in Dallas and love it. I would’ve loved to spend some time in Chicago too, I’ve only visited but seems awesome. We welcome you openly to Texas, but don’t forget why you came!
I moved from Houston to Chicago and have spent considerable time in Dallas.. what’s the motivation for your move? Are you single or have a family? I would say a few general comments:
- Texas cities aren’t as cheap as this forum makes them out to be - if you’re buying areas you actually want to live in can be quite costly plus high property tax, and then you have to have a car so expenses add up. My apartment plus car expenses in Texas added up to my rent in Chicago, and I live in a nicer place here than I did there
- The cities are sprawling collections of neighborhoods and you have to drive literally everywhere - like going to meet with friends at a bar in the next neighborhood over would require a 10 minute uber and getting on the interstate
- Dallas is the land of the $50k millionaire - very flashy and fake culture, turns a lot of people off
- People in Texas settle down early (“ring by spring” is a real thing at Texas schools, a lot of folks getting married before 25) and a lot that stay in Texas have networks from high school as college - so dating can be tough and scene is a little hard to break into as an outsider if you don’t have a network already. There are plenty of transplants who seem to find each other but I found that a lot moved away after a couple years
- Not much nature to be found in the area it that’s your thing. Even just like spending time outside in general is harder imo - I spend so much more time outside in Chicago on the river, lake, parks than I did living in Houston because you have to drive to the outdoor areas and it becomes an ordeal to get out, and summer is too hot to enjoy
- There’s not a ton to do besides eating and drinking - eating and drinking centers around the pool scene in the summer and sports in the fall/winter, but kind of all the same. That was a big con of my time in Houston and my friends that lived in Dallas had similar sentiment
Overall unless you have family there or some other big draw I would pass
Luka! Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders!
Haven’t lived in Dallas but income tax in TX
If you’re a white man I think you’ll be fine. Dallas is a city of old money and pretentiousness. If you have some friends there then I think you’ll be good. The biggest plus is NO WINTER. (Also no state income tax but sales and property tax aren’t cheap).
I lived there after grad school but I’m from Texas and had lots of friends there. I think that helped with my experience overall.
Lived in Chicago and NYC before moving back to Dallas.
Dallas is a bit more boring and whitewashed. Culture exists, but you've gotta find it. Lower levels of education make finding a SO a little more difficult. Don't get me wrong, the girls are gorgeous, but you're gonna have to look a little harder to find much beyond that.
Food scene is okay, but you'll have to drive to find anything interesting.
The only semi-walkable area is uptown, and even that's limited.
Greenspace is quite limited, but they're working on that.
Las colinas for the win
It is hot as shit in Dallas in the summer. Chicago has a more neighborhood feel. You miss the Lake when you don’t have it.
Sightseeing in Dallas sucks. Food is good. People in downtown Dallas are kinda snobby though (personal opinion). Houses and rents are affordable.

As someone who grew up here, left, and moved back, this is the correct answer. Down to the snobbery.
I live in Dallas. We have good bars in the Uptown/Lower Greenville/Bishop Arts districts. Lots of places to eat at - Texas barbecue, Korean food, Mexican food, etc.
Rent is cheap and for $1500/month you can get a nice place near other young professionals. You can even get a 2bed for a little more and still be near the bars...
Summers can get hot but it’s manageable. Plenty of people still riding bikes/running in the summer months.
We have a lot of city golf courses so playing the game is very reasonable. Also, great shotgun ranges.
One thing to consider... Everything is kinda spread out. Not like Chicago where you can walk in the same neighborhood or walk from Downtown to Michigan Ave to Upper Wacker. In Dallas, the areas are much smaller and you HAVE to drive around to see them.
However, the city being spread out means that you can get a nice home in the suburbs for a good price.
I should mention that the city of Dallas itself is very expensive to buy a home in, especially with kids. My friends that lived in the city and went to private schools all had pretty wealthy families
Chicago is way better, I say having lived in both. But I had an amazing group of friends in Dallas that made it worth being in.
Also, don’t move to somewhere new as long as social distancing exists if you don’t have pre-existing friends.
Rising Star
I would only move here to Dallas if you have a family and planning to raise kids here for long term (great schools, affordable housing, good communities, decent job market, etc). Other than that I don’t see much Dallas has to offer compared to Chicago.
Haha, Plano and Plano West kids are an anomaly and their academic prowess isn't a product of the schools there but rather the microcosms within the communities (i.e. asian and wealthy white).
You can find the same thing in Southlake and Arlington.
I’ll brace myself for blowback from the Dallas Fish, but I think Dallas is a wasteland of interstate highways connecting office buildings and conference center hotels. Sweltering hot in the summer with freezing winds in the winter. Can’t walk the city at all,and the only thing to do at night is get drunk in Deep Ellum to forget you’re in Dallas.

As a Dallas native, K1 is not wrong. I cry myself to sleep every night on the giant pile of money I’ve amassed by living in a place where you can buy a decent house in a good neighborhood for $400k, and there’s no income tax.
It’s torture.
Following. Not from Chicago but also considering Dallas
Following!
Native Houstonian here: Dallas is a terrible choice, pick any other city in Texas (Houston, for instance)
Classic Houston kid coming in with the trash takes.
Chicago is better but Dallas and Texas in general is improving a lot every year as everyone is moving there because they think it is cheap. So it has gotten a lot more diverse with excellent food, cultural activities etc. Texans are nice too.
