Struggling heavily with mental health amid the crisis, due to loneliness and the gradual realization that we're really in this for the long haul and things likely aren't going back to normal for a long time. Zoom calls help a little but not that much and the constant barrage of people talking about 'the new normal' only makes it worse. Any tips/advice?

I live alone as well. Do you see a therapist? Also do you have friends in the neighborhood that you can meet from a social distance and taking the right precautions?

like

Fair point. Will definitely think about the therapist. Appreciate it!

I’m alone as well. Consider journaling and practicing gratitude. It really helped me personally. Follow a routine for it and no matter how much work you have, make some time for your own happy time like playing game, watching a movie or tv show, walk, cooking for yourself. Getting involved in other activities than just work makes your life worth. Imagine people who died in this. We should be grateful, we are alive. This is year is all about surviving. Work on yourself meanwhile and get the beast out of you when things open perfectly. Stillness is the key my friend.

Absolutely with EY1 here. Gaming personally helped me a lot. Not a big gamer tbh. But I get involved in solving puzzles, missions and new routes etc and never know how time passed plus a good exercise for my brain lol just take it easy. Don’t judge yourself and stay away from people who judge you. News only once in a day. :) remember what you feed your brain is gonna be processed. So make sure you feed him good.

Something that has really worked for me is connecting with the nature like going on walks every evening, cycling, hiking etc. Keeps me sane and I count my blessings which make me feel grateful and at peace!

like

Yup, I find that does help me too. Should do that more.

Everyone wants to do work remote but there can be serious downsides to sitting home all day long. We aren't meant to do this long term

like

Absolutely agree. And a lot of the people who really push the remote model seem to have absolutely no awareness or understanding that it's simply not a great model for everyone.

Know that everyone in the world is having at least some hard times. If it’s not covid-19, it’s always something. This is coming from someone who has practiced meditation for a long time and has seen tremendous improvements: Try meditation for 20 min a day every morning and practice some pranayama breathing (e.g alternating nostril breathing, ujjayi breath, fire breath, breath work). If you don’t know what they are try looking it up on you tube. If done repeatedly for some time they calm you down, you start to be more peaceful and feel more energetic too. Also a lot of people suggested here committing to a routine like journaling, practicing gratitude, running, lifting or yoga. Know that there’s so much light in this world regardless of what’s happening around. Also know that it is okay to feel sad and anxious.. Learn to stay with those feelings... you will feel discomfort, but let it be... if you try to resist those feelings or hide them, they will emerge even stronger.. If you learn to sit with them and be okay to be uncomfortable, you will see they will gradually disappear. Know that nothing in this world ( fortunately or unfortunately) is permanent. Everything is changing and so are your emotions. Be loving and gentle to yourself and breath ;)

I’m with you here. It’s made me abandon my other healthy habits, like eating right and staying active, and keeping my space organized which has made things worse. Tbh reading posts like this make me feel better because I fee less alone. But it doesn’t solve the issue. I’ve been reconnecting with old friends and that has helped the most. They’re also lonely and stir crazy so it’s been easy to make plans.

Same OP. Weirdly as things have started to open up a bit it’s actually made me feel worse - obviously a few hours a week with friends on a patio is great and all, but it’s no substitute for the 12+ hours a day I would spend with clients and colleagues. I miss all types of human interaction, not just the occasional dinner out with friends. I don’t really have any advice, not sure I’m dealing with it all that well either. I did just plan a 1 week trip to a cabin in the middle of nowhere for some hiking in August - I’ll still be alone, but at least it’s a change of scenery and something to look forward to.

My suggestion is to develop a hobby which you are interested and can do it at home alone. I have this kind of hobbies (hand crafting related) for years, and I started gardening recently, so I kind of enjoy this work from home situation.

I live with wife and - 4/5 year old. Will switch any day..DM me

I know you’re joking, but this actually isn’t funny and isn’t something to joke about. For those of us who live alone, we have gone months and months with zero human interaction. Humans are not meant to be this alone and it is a serious daily struggle for many of us. I know having a family and children at home is hard as well and comes with it’s own problems, but please seek out support from others in that situation rather than joking to us that your situation is worse.

Friend wants to join consulting for the pay. I don’t believe she has the aptitude or energy for it. We worked together in a much slower industry, and even there she complained of being overworked. I’ve sent her resources to polish up her resume and links for roles but she’s insisting on texting/long phone calls asking silly questions. Today she wants a resume review over zoom! She comes without having done her homework. How do I tell her I’ve given as much as I can? How do I decline referring?

I also sent out an email today after the 5th incorrect NPNP that started with “I am honestly starting to feel like I am on the show Punk’d and waiting for Ashton Kutcher to pop into my office” continued in comments..

I was laid off in April when there was just email and phones. Cut to five months later and I’m working again. Yay. But suddenly it’s all Zoom, Slack, Teams, Slides, Sheets. Email is dead. And phones are only for Zoom, Slack, Teams, Slides and Sheets. It feels like I woke up from a coma in a shitty version of the future and everyone else is fine with it. How did anyone adjust to this?

What would you estimate is the salary for a Corp Strategy, Manager in San Francisco at a public enterprise software company? 5 years experience, management consulting background.

I feel like there is an easier way to do this on line learning. Same grade teachers at the same school should be one big group. For example: One teacher has the discussion or lecture and does the presentation to all classrooms. One teacher mans the computer to answer questions that come in and handles any tech issues. Another teacher grades assignment and takes role and handles the admin part. Wouldn’t this be easier? Teachers could rotate or just stay in one role.
