Struggling to find good workers who will stick around for a while… Is high turnover just a truth of retail that I’ll have to accept?

It really depends on the employee. Having a healthy work environment and good benefits definitely helps retention, but sometimes students are working these positions and eventually graduate/move on!

Yes and no. If you have a high turnover, make sure every employee gets an opportunity for an exit interview, that’s the time when they’re the most open and willing to share what and when went wrong.
But also ask yourself - is the pay fair? Is the management professional enough? Do the employee see an opportunity for them to grow?
And you might say yes to all of that, but then, ask yourself if the employees are compensated fairly based on the impact the have on the success of the business, or you think they are compensated fairly because some pizza place down the road pays close to nothing to those who held the same title?
The management - they should not just control the process, but they should be empathetic and lead by example, meaning if the manager shows up late, how can they demand from the employee to be on time? If they take longer breaks, how do the employees get 30 minutes only?
And lastly - growth isn’t just learning new skills. Do the employee feel like the management putting the effort into developing them into their own role in the future? Do they see a potential leader in the employee?

Moving on from Hotels (Hospitality)?

I’ve been thinking about this for awhile now, but it is very to commit to actually accept a new job offer since I really do love my job. My only complaint is, the pay vs workload is very small. I’m a manager now and my property offered me a director position… but the salary is still low! To make six figures, it’ll take another 5-6 years to grind it out.

Should I move on and go to a different industry? Opinions are welcome! Thanks in advance.
