I found some inspiration by looking up old photos of places I had traveled to. Gardens, wildlife photography and mountains are a few themes I have. Mixed with pics of friends and family. Also, prints of famous art that I have seen in person made it personal for my walls. One of my recent prints is a peace dove drawing from Picasso in a navy matte. Need a frame
I resort to Instagram and look for independent illustrators or painters who often will have great work at really affordable prices. Also, keep an eye out for local art shows where you might buy framed pieces at a little over the price of a decent frame.
Don’t forget art schools! They usually have sales too.
Find out what aesthetic you like. Consider how you want to feel when you walk into your apartment. What colors make you happy? Then plug that into Pinterest for inspiration. Make a mood board. My apartment is filled with art that only sparks joy. My living room, kitchen, bathrooms, hallway, office, and master bedroom have a range of images from surrealism collage work, black and white photographs, abstract paintings, line drawings, and digital print. I would also be cautious not to feel pressured into picking something just because you want something on your walls. Enjoy the journey of curating a space that looks like you.
I have been able to secure some really good art work/ paintings from Goodwill. If you are okay to put a little elbow grease after coming home with cleaning, changing the brown paper on the back sprucing up a little. It’s satisfying to do our bit towards a green future and recycle and repurpose used stuff!
I make it a point to check their art section when I go to donate my stuff every 4 month or so. We have a policy of donate 1 item for every new item bought in our house.
You can download art that is in the public domain! I think through national archives or something like that
Aside from that, I buy local, create my own stuff, and pick non traditional Knick knack type things that can be hung up
I don’t plan out all items at once but in terms of aesthetic i mix metals/materials but look for a general cohesive sense of color or warmth. I think my apt would be mid century mod / maximalist Scandinavian w a lot of plant/nature and music influences
Also you can look up architecture digest interviews / house walk throughs to figure out what you like
Think about aspiration, inspiration and manifestation. What you look at everyday has a profound effect on your reality.. it could be a dream, it could be place, it could be a feeling of peace you get from a picture. I am.very careful of the messages I allow into my being.. I'd avoid any messaging that is contrary to what you aspire to. I have beaches, family, some abstracts that make me feel peaceful, a lot of pitbull art because I love my dog.. and a Phoenix over my work desk :) because I always rise.. :)
Also Etsy is a great place to find art!

I go vintage shopping to see what inspires.

Check out Opposite Wall and Desenio, I’m not sure if they are Canadian only but can give you ideas at least. I’m currently on OW and I have picked out prints that go together as a duo. Also Winners and Bouclair have framed prints at good prices if you like any, I guess the American equivalent would be Marshall’s? If you find a print you like that is already framed that’s a good deal because framing can cost $50-300 on its own.
Pictorem is quite good. You have a lot of artists that use it
