Start with a PCP, but also look into talking with a therapist. Most insurance plans have an EAP, Employee Assistance Plan, that covers some number of visits for free with a therapist. I think it’s usually three visits, but it depends on your plan. Typically you’ll start by taking with a trained therapist who likely doesn’t have an MD or license to prescribe medication, but they can help you determine which level of care is right for you. I did this about four years ago. I was just going through a rough time in my life, so the therapist suggested I continue with weekly visits to her or someone of a similar qualification for a few months. It helped immensely just having someone to talk things through with. However, at that first visit with the therapist, she did a thorough evaluation of my symptoms, life style, mental state, etc. before making her recommendation. I felt very comfortable with her after that first visit, but you can use your three free visits to see multiple doctors/therapists before you find one that is right for you.
Good luck! With the right doctor and treatment, you can absolutely get the help you need and live a very happy life!
Some primary care physicians will prescribe anti anxiety medications. Go to a psychiatrist (not a psychologist) and you will definitely walk away with a medication. That is what they do so.....it’s a maslow’s hammer thing. The problem with any medications is that there are side effects that you won’t like. Decreased libido and a general malaise are ones that affected me most. I have found that medication to “bring me off the ledge” so to speak with therapy/introspection for long term relief worked. Then I could get off the meds which I hated. Best of luck OP.
I go to talk therapy regularly
Would definitely start with a primary care physician first if you don’t have one...just in general- it’s always good to have one! Also, depending on your insurance you may have to go though your PCP first anyway.
Good advice in this thread, also, consider meditation, evaluate what your exercise level is look at your alcohol consumption.
OP, if I may give you an alternative suggestion, try reading this book called the power of now. It singlehandedly got rid of my anxiety.
