Is there a way he can use google docs and text to speech? He can say what he wants then might have edit punctuation and or spelling if speech isn’t clear. Then if needed to practice fine motor or handwriting skills he/she can make a final copy to turn in by copying from the document on to paper.
I think the only place you went left is in taking so much time before you scribed. If the intention of your assignment was to get his thoughts documented, you both were successful when he verbally did that. If the meltdown had to do with writing anxiety- looking at that blank page and freaking out - you can continue to support him with sentence frames, sentence starters, etc, to build up his confidence, while, also reducing the use of those supports over time. Lots of things I don’t know about the student and his skills and behavior but I hope this helps.
Interesting. Another idea is to go ahead and act as scribe during class time and have him write it using the already written version as a model...so it can be a little punitive from his perspective but it’s also supported practice. Then, you can act as scribe leaving out key terms and have him fill in one key concept or whatever is appropriate and then become more demanding (increase rigor) by increasing what he has to write or fill in over time.
Google docs built in mic in the tools tab is a great tool. Your student talks with You’s out content and it will type it up.
I am a middle school resource teacher. I have a few students with dyslexia. Handwritten work causes tears. Google Docs has really helped. It was difficult for some students to learn how to use it but after they learn by seeing me model it in Google Meet they get it down with practice. It’s helped with their main class work as well.
