Sub vs. Datejust for everyday wear and why? Let’s assume you have access to both.

Datejust. Sub with a suit is now a common look and I think nobody would have a problem with it, but I wouldn’t do it myself. Datejust on the other hand truly works with any dress level.

like

Sub. I've only liked a DJ with fluted bezel, but then it's too "blingy" for my taste and my sense of what I'd wear to the office. Obvs personal preference, but my two cents!

like

DJ with a jubilee bracelet - because it looks much better than a sub imo!! Like my colleague said though, it is too blingy, so sub might be the right choice for a more understated look
Personally, I’d care less about optics and wear what I love if I’m spending that kind of money

like

+1 for DJ. If I were to only buy one watch to wear everyday, I’d go DJ fluted bezel on a jubilee. To me it’s just so versatile - looks at home with a dress shirt or a t-shirt

Sub for everyday wear; DJ with a suit.

I think it depends on your style more. Sub is very versatile while I find the date just gives more a dressy feel.

Both are basically ubiquitous these days and can almost serve the same purpose. The best “all-rounder” though would be a smooth bezel DJ41 (or 36 if you have smaller wrists) on Oyster bracelet.

The Sub will be more sporty and casual, or you can turn up the dressiness/blinginess on the DJ by opting for Jubilee and/or fluted bezel. The Sub hides and wears scratches incredibly well with the brushed bracelet and ceramic bezel. The fluted/jubilee also hides scratches well because of all the different curves and angles. The smooth/oyster combo would show the most wear the quickest, but it’s still amazing.

My favorite, most comfortable watches are my OP39 and the Explorer 1. Neither overly sporty nor overly dressy; they both work anywhere. The Yachtmaster40 is also a pretty amazing chimera between a Sub and DJ.

In the end, pick the watch that sings to you the loudest and let others think what they will. You’re buying and wearing the watch, not them.

I never wear my sub to work because I find it uncomfortable on the wrist while typing all day.

like

Two factors; one of which I think is my fault. I didn’t have the bracelet sized right. It was just a little too loose so the watch would tilt and sort of jab me in the wrist with the pointy end of the crown knurling. The thicker, bulbous caseback of the Sub also doesn’t help this situation. I’m in the 1% who have some issues with the sub; but now I wear it on rubber and it’s awesome.

The second issue, is the bezel teeth are so sharp they grab at the inner stitch of my cuff. This also likely has a lot to do with my brand of shirt (Charles Tyrwhitt), and it’s probably not all shirts, maybe just the one I wore that day.

In general it’s also a heavier watch than a DJ. Nothing wrong with that, unless you’ve got smaller wrists, then it might become annoying.

I have arguably too many Rolexes, so I have like five other options that make more sense at the office. I like saving the Sub for the weekend.

like

DJ all the way

Having both, I often pick the DJ36 as a daily. It’s more comfortable on my wrist, and with the domes bezel, it flies under the radar. The ceramic Sub bezel catches the light very easily as would a fluted DJ bezel - something to consider if you’re not trying to advertise your watch.

For someone with a 6.5” wrist, I picked the DJ36 because it’s more comfortable. I thought about trading up for the 41, but the 36 is such a classic size and less shouty (esp. if you opt for the fluted bezel). For those days where it feels too small, I can always put on my sub or...panerai 44mm. You’ll have to try both on and see what works best for you. Also, don’t forget the jubilee bracelet also adds a different feel vs. the oyster bracelet.

DJ if “everyday wear” means 5x/week; Sub if you also want it for casual wear and weekends.

I sold my sub (purchased new in 2017) three months later for a DJ41 and never looked back.
