I’d apply directly in-house. Working through a headhunter/external recruiter is likely to hurt you more than help unless you are at an executive level

The only recruiter I’ve worked with was constantly giving me updates. I told him the timeline I wanted to get a job and start work and he got me interviews and hired exactly on my timeline. Granted I was coming from a big law job, but I still would expect a recruiter to be giving weekly updates at the least.

@OP never ever never send your materials to an outside recruiter in Word. Never send them without getting explicit confirmation in writing that they will only use them to apply to that specific job, and no others. Be careful!!!! Also, v. unusual to sign something. Are you sure this isn't identity theft?

What’s the issue with word?

If you are a law clerk and not an experienced, barred, practicing attorney it’s highly unlikely that a headhunter aka 3rd party recruiter will be able to help you. Nearly every firm I’ve ever worked with has explicitly stated in their fee agreements that they will not accept resumes for students or 1st year attorneys. Most corporations are similar, they only want to pay a recruiter for hard to find existing skilled and experienced attorneys. Working with a recruiter can generally be extremely helpful: they can ensure your resume is actually read by the hiring attorney, they can follow up repeatedly until they get feedback or next steps and a good headhunter can also be an advocate for your experience (they only get paid if you get hired). If you don’t hear back you should definitely ping the recruiter. They are likely working on several roles with dozens of candidates and you prompting the recruiter might remind them to prompt the client for feedback / next steps. As others have mentioned, just because a recruiter thinks you’re a good fit doesn’t mean the client will. I hope all this insight is helpful as you navigate your job search and your next career move.

Is this a recruiter that is an employee of that specific company or is this a headhunter?

Got it. You may or may not be a good fit. The headhunter is likely just submitting as many apps as possible for anyone remotely qualified if hopes of landing someone so he/she can get paid. Probably not what you want to hear but I wouldn’t put all of my eggs in this basket.

Just got an offer a Deloitte Consultant position and the HR recruiter said base pay will be in the low 90k with no wiggle room. A recruiter has made a text post about my dream unicorn role on their LinkedIn, with no signs of this job posted anywhere else. What else can I do to apply, in addition to just in-mailing then?

Looking for roles internally at the current company, and the role identified is an individual contributor role. I exited consulting at a Director /SM level, and due to the layoff took a not so good role 2 years ago. The hiring manager for this role asked "why do you want to be a people manager". Frankly, I was a little shocked at this even being a question. How would you react in this situation it you were me? Would you entertain/respond to this question at all? The communication is in writing.
