I asked my landlord, she said no.
Option 1. Ask your landlord and explain your circumstances and see if they will help. Your contract may have an early termination provision to follow too
Option 2. Read your lease and see if any conditions have been met that allow early terminations
Option 3. See if you have any legal (beyond your contract) right to leave (I.e. you no longer have quiet enjoyment...)
Option 4 (not advised). Get a new phone number, change your banking info, and disappear into the night
Hope these options help!
Option 4 was supposed to be a joke. My apologies KPMG 1. Agreed that it would be a terrible thing to actually do, especially for anyone in a profession with ethical standards.
I asked my landlord - they said no problem as long as I could find a new renter.
Same, asked the management company in the apartment busking I lived in LA. The found a new renter the next day, and I got out 2 months early.
I saw a ton of videos of people that were able to successfully negotiate with their landlords. Google ‘property sex, pornhub’

They seemed cool at first and let me move out without penalty because of a dog problem, I got this written in an email and drafted a form stating this for them to sign. The form said they would only bill me if they found damaged property. My parents are landlords. I grew up cleaning rentals. I'm a perfect tennant and clean up really well. They signed. They then took my deposit after saying they wouldn't and asked for more money for fake damages that they must have photographed in another unit or in bad lighting. I then had a lawyer friend send a letter on their letterhead stating I would not be paying and would like my deposit back. I took photos of the apt condition to counter what they were saying and attached to the letter (always do that!!!). They took the deposit and didn't pursue the additional amount and ignored my attempts to collect my deposit after that.
My dog and the upstairs neighbors dog were driving eachother insane. 100 year old building, 75 lb dog upstairs on hardwood floors. Everytime it ran across the floor it sounded like the ceiling was going to cave in. I have a little old man small dog who is quiet and mostly sleeps except apparently when he thinks the ceiling is going to fall on him. Landlord told me to get rid of my dog and I said no and asked if I could please either be moved upstairs or break the lease as myself, the upstairs neighbor and all 4 of the neighbors on the other sides of us were being tormented and one of us leaving was better than all 6. The upstairs neighbor with the large dog was a nice person and we got together and aligned ourselves against the landlord and both moved out.

We had an early termination clause, paid the amount stated and left
I explained the situation and offered to find a sublease (which luckily wasn’t too hard). Was able to get my full deposit back too.
I was financially unable to keep paying rent so I paid a $500 fee to break my lease.

When I needed to do this, I asked the landlord if I could find another renter would they agree to break my lease. They said yes and I did.
This is rarely if ever successful. Proceed with extreme caution. Rights swing heavily in favor of the landlord, and you signed a term bound contract. I used to do landlord tenant work in a former life.
Outside of the circumstances EY1 laid out above, yes, agree. That said, we are living in unprecedented times (in case you haven’t heard). There are more avenues out of lease now, than ever.
I got bedbugs the day after I moved in. They argued I brought them but I didn’t. Lawyers got involved, ended up paying almost as much to the dang lawyer than the lease lol
Not sure if this is a win haha
Always get a place that has the early termination clause built in

I just asked and our landlord said yes, but we had been there 4 years and were perfect tenants. It was a UES apt six blocks from Central Park, so he had no issues getting it rented out. I’m also pretty sure our landlord was part of the mob, so I didn’t want to piss him off.
Told them with two months notice “Im so sorry I have to move out of my apartment before the lease, I’m leaving on this date. For full transparency I’m leaving due to how covid 19 has affected my job and my life with my job. It’s becoming too difficult financially to balance everything”
In reality I’m actually spending a little more money and getting more space. I didn’t lie though I’m moving because I need the space to work and don’t want to live in a one bedroom if this is now my life’s going to be for another year.
Be transparent enough and make sure they think it’s covid. My landlord waived the fee, took the security deposit still, but I never expect that back after my passed experiences.

Gave two months notice and they were able to find a new tenant to take over the lease
I asked if it was possible, they said give us 60 days notice and we’ll take $500 out of your security deposit. No problems here
