Is this with a company or an individual landlord? Have been a landlord in the past and I can say for sure that if you are a good tenant paying rent at relative market rate they don’t want to lose you but mine is the individual perspective. Bird in hand = two in bush
This. My tenant reassured me that their finances are secure (being in healthcare) but I let them know that if their circumstances change I’m willing to work with them to figure out something that works. I’m all the way out on the west coast so I value their continuity way more than an extra $50/month.
Tell them with the uncertainty right now is it ok if we leave rent as is?
FWIW: 1) I would never lose a good tenant for $50+ a month 2) I would bounce a bad tenant and eat a half months rent even if I wanted the price to remain as is 3) renters have almost no power in Chicago bc it’s beyond easy to find willing tenants quickly 4) being a landlord is not fun
Use the opportunity to negotiate something better like no fine or lower fine for breaking the lease early as long as you give notice or something. That way you get flexibility if anything changes with a small increase in rent
I told my landlord I needed more time to think about resigning, ghosted her for a couple weeks and then she dropped the EOY increase in rent
Our building increased the rent for next signing, we didn’t sign and they put the apartment back on market for ~$150 less then what we are paying right now.
