I want to become a more competitive applicant but not sure where to start. Are there any certificates, skills, or knowledge that I should be learning in my free time?

It’s going to be rough, that doesn’t mean losing hope. I’m going to bounce if A2 and suggest keeping an open mind to areas upstate. I worked upstate and in NYC. You will get great experience upstate and opportunities that wouldn’t necessarily be given to you in NYC. While you’re on the search, maybe look into some volunteer opportunities. It’ll help build your resume and land you some connections. Also joining a bar wouldn’t hurt if they allow law school graduates to join as members.
It’s got to be tough. Just a lot of uncertainty with hiring and the bar exam. Most firms will unfortunately wait until you pass the bar at this point. I would highly suggest networking with alumni. Get the list from career services. There are so many applications coming in now you will get lost in the shuffle otherwise. Also, look in Buffalo, etc. in addition to NY. Then when things improve you can lateral into NY with a compelling story. Better to have a foot in the door somewhere right now IMO.
Thanks for the upstate suggestion- at this point I’m not really able to move out of the NYC area as my spouse works here and can’t relocate, but worth looking into to see if there are positions that are able to be remote (at least for now)
Tough time out there. Where are you looking NYC area (how far North)? What field are you looking for (personal injury, worker’s compensation, criminal)?

That’s definitely better than none. Perhaps try expanding into markets outside of New York if that’s possible?
For reference - decent grades, great law school. I had great internship experiences and they were very happy with me/my work, but my summer firm (boutique) couldn’t hire me for full time due to covid. I’m constantly applying but get almost zero interviews. Career services have helped a bit by sending job opportunities but those haven’t gone anywhere either. It’s so disheartening 😣
